Despite labeling these ads as coming from state-controlled media, that disclosure may not sufficiently inform users of the foreign influence. This situation raises concerns especially as Meta has previously banned advertisements from Russian state media due to foreign interference.

CGTN has a history of promoting pro-CCP narratives while downplaying significant issues such as the treatment of Uyghur people and presenting a favorable view of China’s global role.Other Chinese outlets linked to the CCP, including Xinhua and The People’s Daily, are also involved in advertising campaigns that obscure the state’s more controversial actions. The article underscores the ongoing relationships between social media platforms and Chinese propaganda, alongside similar ties in other major tech firms like Google and Amazon.Concerns about these relationships have prompted calls for American companies to prioritize national interests over connections with entities affiliated with the CCP.

Meta rakes in ad revenue helping the CCP export propaganda

Chinese state-run outlets that have been implicated in global propaganda schemes are actively paying Meta to promote their content, a Washington Examiner review of advertising records has found.

China Global Television Network, China Daily, The People’s Daily, Global Times, China Youth Daily, and China Xinhua News, all of which are controlled by the Chinese Communist Party, collectively have hundreds of active advertisements running on Facebook and Instagram.
