Walker, an ethicist at a Southern Baptist seminary in Kentucky, reflects a growing sentiment among conservative evangelicals to rekindle the long-term legal strategy that ultimately led to the reversal of <em>Roe v. Wade.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Christians are called to play the long game,&rdquo; Walker said. &ldquo;There are burgeoning embryonic efforts being discussed at the legal-strategy level on how to begin to challenge <em>Obergefell<\/em>. How do we take the lessons from <em>Roe<\/em> that took 50 years? What is the legal strategy to overturn <em>Obergefell<\/em> at some point in the future?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>This renewed push comes amid rising conservative momentum in courts and legislatures, including a forthcoming case that the Liberty Counsel hopes the Supreme Court will use to end same-sex marriage rights.<\/p>\n<p>Conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has previously signaled support for overturning <em>Obergefell<\/em>, having expressed in a concurring opinion in the case that overruled <em>Roe<\/em>, <em>Dobbs v. Signed by former President Joe Biden in 2022, the law requires federal recognition of same-sex marriages. A contentious debate is unfolding over the future of the SBC&rsquo;s public policy arm, the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission.
