In response,O&#8217;Connell emphasized the need for transparency regarding his executive order,although he faced harsh critiques,including from U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn, who accused him of obstructing law enforcement&#8217;s efforts to maintain safety in Tennessee. It was amended to include all departments after an operation conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Tennessee Highway Patrol in early May netted 196 arrests. Some of those arrested had extensive criminal histories and some had removal orders, according to a release from ICE.<\/p>\n<p>Two committees in the U.S. House of Representatives have sent a letter to O&rsquo;Connell asking for more information and documents pertaining to the order. O&rsquo;Connell has until Thursday at 5 p.m. to respond,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/tennessee\/article_731ae83d-952f-42c4-acaa-582f4c986104.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to the letter.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Republican Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton asked O&rsquo;Connell to rescind the executive order.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This order has jeopardized the safety of federal and state agents to the extent that individuals are harassing and interfering in the lawful duty of these agents,&rdquo;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CSexton25\/status\/1930657873819832330\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sexton said.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>O&rsquo;Connell did not directly respond to the criticism on Friday but said his actions were about &ldquo;transparency&rdquo; when questioned by reporters.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our focus is on participating in conversations,&rdquo; the mayor said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/nashville\/2025\/06\/09\/nashville-mayor-immigration-executive-order\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in a published report<\/a>. &ldquo;We don&rsquo;t spend as much energy on statements. I think if they have specific requests, we&rsquo;ll pay attention to those.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., has frequently mentioned O&rsquo;Connell on social media and shot back at O&rsquo;Connell&rsquo;s claim of transparency.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is not about transparency. This is about obstructing ICE&rsquo;s work to enforce the rule of law and make Tennessee communities safe,&rdquo;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MarshaBlackburn\/status\/1931830318350082415\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">she said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Blackburn introduced a bill last week that would <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >make doxxing federal law enforcement<\/a> a crime. Nashville officials are publishing all encounters with immigration officers on a website.
