The TSA’s advisory, shared on March 5, includes two key recommendations for travelers to enhance their online safety.First, it urges individuals not to plug their phones directly into public USB ports due to the risk of “juice jacking,” where hackers can install malware to steal personal data. Instead, they should use their own TSA-compliant power adapters or battery packs. Second, travelers are advised against using free public WiFi, especially when making online purchases, as this poses risks for entering sensitive information. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) supports these warnings, further advising users to choose the “charge only” option if prompted to share data when connecting devices to USB ports. A personal account from Alex Carlton illustrates these dangers, as she fell victim to a Wi-fi scam at Sydney Airport, resulting in an unauthorized charge on her credit card.

The Transportation Security Administration issued a cybersecurity warning to airport travelers.

The post, which the TSA d to on March 5, included two best practices for the public to follow, and the potential consequences for ignoring them.

“When you’re at an airport do not plug your phone directly into a USB port.
