Nanette Barrag\u00e1n, a California Democrat, asserted that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was responsible for escalating tensions during protests in Los Angeles that initially began peacefully. these protests were sparked by recent ICE raids in Paramount, California. While protesters faced arrests for unlawful assembly and violent actions, Barrag\u00e1n dismissed claims of their aggression. She accused federal officers of using tear gas and other forceful measures that aggravated the situation. Governor Gavin Newsom echoed her sentiments, criticizing President trump&#8217;s decision to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops as inflammatory, asserting that local law enforcement had the situation under control and no National Guard deployment was needed. Nanette Barrag&aacute;n (D-CA) claimed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/immigration\/3430845\/tom-homan-ice-opposition-democrats-someone-could-die\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement\">U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/a> was the first to escalate tensions amid the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/3434738\/anti-ice-protesters-clash-police-los-angeles-after-raids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement\">protests<\/a> in Los Angeles that &ldquo;started peacefully.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>A protest broke out Friday against the ICE raids in Paramount, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/California\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">California<\/a>, that happened earlier that day. Then we had federal officers, you know, doing the tear gas, shooting out pellets,&rdquo; Barrag&aacute;n said on CNN&rsquo;s <em>State of the Union<\/em> on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;By federal officers, you mean ICE?&rdquo; host Dana Bash interjected.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;ICE, yes,&rdquo; Barrag&aacute;n said. &ldquo;And, you know, people were there to protest. They&rsquo;re there to protest the mass deportations that are happening. And so it was peaceful. And of course, you escalate the situation. Now you&lsquo;re talking about bringing in the National Guard to militarize the situation. It&lsquo;s gonna get worse. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), who <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CAgovernor\/status\/1931504803487879617\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called&nbsp;<\/a>President Donald Trump&rsquo;s decision to send 2,000 National Guard troops to the area &ldquo;purposefully inflammatory,&rdquo; predicting it &ldquo;will only escalate tensions.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;LA authorities are able to <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >access law enforcement assistance<\/a> at a moment&rsquo;s notice. We are in close coordination with the city and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/no-spike-in-florida-coronavirus-cases-despite-no-mask-mandate\/\" title=\"No Spike in Florida Coronavirus Cases Despite No Mask Mandate\">county<\/a>, and there is currently no unmet need. The Guard has been admirably serving LA throughout recovery. Terms\">erode public trust<\/a>,&rdquo; Newsom&nbsp;posted on X. <\/p>\n<p>Barrag&aacute;n similarly claimed that she had spoken to local sheriffs who told her &ldquo;they have things under control. There is no need for the National Guard. They have the manpower that they need.&rdquo; However, the Los Angeles County Sheriff seemingly disputed Barrag&aacute;n&rsquo;s claim that the protesters were peaceful, writing in a statement that they became &ldquo;increasingly agitated&rdquo; and demonstrated &ldquo;violent behavior&rdquo; toward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/police\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">police officers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Those are not the people that are coming out to protest immigration,&rdquo; Barrag&aacute;n said. &ldquo;So last night when I talked to the sheriff, he had told me the situation in Paramount was under control, that the people that were peacefully protest [SIC] have left. The situation was now across the street into the Compton area. And this was the unruly folks that Saturday night crowd, the people that were actually there to protest immigration were gone.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/3434847\/trump-thanks-national-guard-job-well-done-la-riots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>TRUMP THANKS NATIONAL GUARD FOR &lsquo;JOB WELL DONE&rsquo; COMBATING LA RIOTS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mayor Karen Bass <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/3434847\/trump-thanks-national-guard-job-well-done-la-riots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"confirmed\">claimed<\/a> that the National Guard had not been deployed in the city of Los Angeles, 15 miles north of Paramount.
