Bob Ferguson signed into law last month. Braddock argues that since nearly 75% of the general fund is dedicated to public safety and the criminal legal system, the measure would generate sufficient funding to offset the $150 million deficit and avoid cuts to essential services and programs that were previously warned.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;With approval of this proposal, we can craft a responsible budget that invests in people while preventing deep cuts,&rdquo; Braddock said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/content.govdelivery.com\/accounts\/WAKING\/bulletins\/3e39998\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Former King County Executive Dow Constantine&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/washington\/article_38ede626-068b-4e58-abf8-1e09ee9a1971.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">previously warned<\/a>&nbsp;that tough decisions would have to be made unless the county received help from the state. Constantine has repeatedly pointed to the state&rsquo;s 1% cap on property tax growth that has been in place since 2001 for the county&rsquo;s budget issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3425782\/catholic-bishops-sue-washington-mandatory-reporter-law-child-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">CATHOLIC BISHOPS SUE WASHINGTON OVER LAW REQUIRING PRIESTS TO BREAK SECRECY ON CHILD ABUSE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Braddock&rsquo;s sales tax proposal could prevent major cuts to the King County Sheriff&rsquo;s Office. The Center Square&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/washington\/article_f50bf144-f47e-11ef-8239-d370c79a4e42.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">previously reported<\/a>&nbsp;on a target reduction of $30.2 million from the KCSO&rsquo;s office that could result in a minimal law enforcement presence in unincorporated parts of the county. The proposed $30.2 million in <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >cuts represents roughly 80 deputy positions<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The sales and use tax proposal will have to be approved by the King County Council before it can be enacted.
