Their disagreement began over Musk’s criticism of the One Big Lovely Bill Act, which aims to extend tax cuts and modify welfare and military spending. Following escalating tensions, including Musk calling the bill “outrageous” and Trump threatening to cut Musk’s government contracts, a White House effort to mitigate the fallout has been initiated. A call between Trump and Musk is anticipated to help negotiate peace, amid contrasting public statements-Trump downplaying the feud while Musk initially threatened drastic measures regarding SpaceX. However, Musk later agreed to reconsider his stance, suggesting both parties are working toward a resolution.

After a day of feuding, it appears that President Donald Trump and former Department of Government Efficiency head Elon Musk may be on the path to making up.

Several posts to X by Musk, along with comments by President Trump to Politico on Thursday evening, seemed to confirm that both parties were backing away from their condemnation of each other.

Musk had been publicly critical of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which is currently under debate in the Senate. Musk’s recent posts on X and Trump’s remarks to Politico on Thursday night indicated that both are stepping back from their previous criticisms of each other. Musk had openly criticized the One Big Beautiful Bill Act currently being debated in the Senate, which extends tax cuts from 2017 while reducing welfare spending and increasing military funding. He expressed disappointment over the bill’s size last month, stating it would increase the budget deficit rather than decrease it and undermine efforts by his team at DOGE. Although his concerns may hold some truth, they overlook how government functions; legislative negotiations have always been part of politics.

Despite this tension, Musk intensified his criticism in a post where he labeled the spending bill as “outrageous,” “pork-filled,” and “a disgusting abomination.” He also declared that politicians who betray Americans should be removed from office next November.

In response to Musk’s comments, Trump threatened to terminate Musk’s government contracts and suggested he was becoming unwelcome at the White House. Trump claimed cutting these contracts could save billions in federal spending.

Musk retaliated by announcing plans to decommission SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft but later retracted this decision after being advised to reconcile with Trump by influential figures like hedge fund manager Bill Ackman.

Meanwhile, White House aides attempted to mediate between them while Trump downplayed any feud during a conversation with Politico. Both men have their points: Congress cannot continue its current trajectory indefinitely as demonstrated by DOGE’s work; however, Trump’s assertion about potential consequences if certain agreements aren’t reached also holds merit.
