More jobs were added than economists anticipated, and the unemployment rate held steady. The report, though, showed large downward revisions to the job gains of the previous two months.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the numbers suggest the economy is holding up as President Donald Trump moves past the first part of his second term.<\/p>\n<p>Trump&rsquo;s actions so far have dramatically raised uncertainty, at times raising fears about a downturn. In particular, the rollout of tariffs on a scale unseen since before the Great Depression damaged consumer confidence and led businesses to worry about supply chains. Trump is also working with congressional Republicans to pass a massive fiscal overhaul that would extend tax cuts and cut some federal spending.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Democrats would use any weakness in the labor market to place blame on Trump and his Make America Great Again agenda.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What it means for &hellip; the Fed<\/h2>\n<p>Friday morning&rsquo;s report did little to change investor expectations that Federal Reserve officials are not likely to cut their interest rate target before September.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has been pressing Fed Chairman Jerome Powell hard to lower rates to boost borrowing and spending.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The underlying reality<\/h2>\n<p>Friday&rsquo;s report suggests that job growth has been decelerating in recent months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is helpful to look at the overall trend for the labor market. With significant downward revisions to the numbers for March and April, the three-month moving average of job gains was just 135,000 in May.
