The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) instructed Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to disregard environmental regulations and swiftly begin building 36 miles of barriers along the U.S.-Mexico border. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem issued a waiver allowing the construction of 18- to 30-foot high slatted walls and related roads without the usual approvals, citing urgency in border security.<\/p>\n<p>The main focus will be on the Tucson Sonoita Project in Arizona, which includes 24 miles of wall, with additional segments planned in the Yuma region and New Mexico. Funding for these projects comes from unspent congressional allocations from fiscal years 2020 and 2021. The waiver enables the federal government to quickly erect barriers, highlighting a commitment to border security while <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >bypassing lengthy environmental assessments<\/a>. Goldwater Range.<\/p>\n<p>Further east in New Mexico, 8.3 miles of wall will go up as part of the Santa Teresa Wall Project, the Wall Project Anapra, and near an unspecified port of entry.<\/p>\n<p>The projects have been funded through unused money that Congress appropriated in fiscal 2020 and 2021.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A pair of migrant families from Brazil pass through a gap in the border wall to reach the United States to seek asylum after crossing from Mexico in Yuma, Arizona, June 10, 2021. (AP Photo\/Eugene Garcia, File)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to the DHS, Noem&rsquo;s environmental waiver allows the federal government to construct barriers quickly where they are needed rather than wait for studies to ensure the land will not be negatively affected.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Projects executed under a waiver are critical steps to secure the southern border and reinforce our commitment to border security,&rdquo; the DHS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/national-media-release\/dhs-issues-new-waivers-expedite-new-border-wall-construction-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">said<\/a> in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>Noem cited her authority under Section 102 of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 to waive the regulations.<\/p>\n<p>The waiver is Noem&rsquo;s second since she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/immigration\/3373401\/kristi-noem-bypasses-environmental-regulations-expedite-border-wall-construction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">announced<\/a> plans in April to build 2.5 miles of barrier in southwestern and southcentral California. It followed a precedent set during the first Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>Trump campaigned in 2016 to build a &ldquo;beautiful&rdquo; wall between the United States and Mexico. When he took office in January 2017, the barrier between the 1,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dhs-spurs-forward-building-border-wall-in-california-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"... spurs forward building ... in California - Washington Examiner\">954-mile border covered approximately<\/a> one-third of that space.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/immigration\/3431293\/kristi-noem-orders-crackdown-visa-overstays-boulder-terrorist-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">KRISTI NOEM ORDERS CRACKDOWN ON VISA OVERSTAYS FOLLOWING BOULDER TERRORIST ATTACK<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Trump obtained funding through Congress and redirected funds from the Defense and Treasury departments to the DHS.
