This resolution, which was supported by fourteen of the fifteen council members and co-sponsored by the ten non-permanent members, faced opposition solely from the U.S.Ambassador to the UN, Dorothy Shea, who deemed the resolution &#8220;unacceptable.&#8221; She highlighted concerns that it failed to condemn Hamas or demand its disarmament,and criticized the U.N. for not addressing the broader conflict. Security Council members, the U.S. possesses veto power, which prevents any resolution from being approved.<\/p>\n<p>Before the vote, Dorothy Shea, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N., called the resolution &ldquo;unacceptable&rdquo; and said her opposition to it should be unsurprising.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;U.S. opposition to this resolution should come as no surprise,&rdquo; Shea said. &ldquo;It is unacceptable for what it does say, it is unacceptable for what it does not say, and it is unacceptable for the manner in which it has been advanced.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>There were conflicting reports on whether the resolution included the release of hostages held by Hamas. The U.N. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2025\/06\/1164056\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">webpage<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/UN_News_Centre\/status\/1930358040437420409\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">social media<\/a> indicated that hostages being released were part of the resolution. However, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gaza-ceasefire-un-security-council-e14ee5e3dc7e8e9a161f058f0381513d\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">multiple<\/a> media <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/06\/04\/us-vetoes-un-security-council-resolution-demanding-immediate-ceasefire-in-gaza\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a> suggested this was not the case.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the ceasefire, the resolution contained several other statements and demands. It demanded that all restrictions on humanitarian aid sent to Gaza be lifted and &ldquo;essential services be restored.&rdquo; It expressed support for the continuance of mediation efforts initiated by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar and expressed &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/neither-state-nor-territory-trump-has-third-option-on-greenland\/\" title=\"Neither State Nor Territory: Trump Has Third Option On Greenland\">grave concern&#038;rdquo<\/a>; over the &ldquo;catastrophic humanitarian situation&rdquo; in Gaza.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, Shea thought the U.N. needed to go further in its resolution. She was critical of the U.N. for not including any condemnation of Hamas in its resolution or requiring them to disarm and leave Gaza.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The United States has been clear, we would not support any measure that fails to condemn Hamas and does not call for Hamas to disarm and leave Gaza,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Shea also blasted Hamas for rejecting multiple ceasefire attempts, which have prolonged the war, including &ldquo;one over the weekend&rdquo; that could have ended the war and secured the release of all remaining hostages.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We cannot allow the Security Council to award Hamas&rsquo; intransigence,&rdquo; Shea said. &ldquo;Hamas and other terrorists must have no future in Gaza.
