Currently, overstaying a visa is not classified as a federal crime, but under the new bill, it would become punishable by fines and possible prison time. The legislation was proposed considering a recent attack in Boulder, Colorado, associated with a suspect who was found to be unlawfully residing in the U.S. after his visa expired. Banks argued that overstays pose significant security risks, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >citing instances involving<\/a> the Boulder attacker and 9\/11 hijackers. My bill cracks down on visa overstays with criminal penalties to stop threats before they happen.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Overstaying a visa is not a federal crime, but it would be classified as one if Banks&rsquo;s bill passed.<\/p>\n<p>Under federal law, not departing before a visa expires would be considered unlawful entry. A tourist who overstays a visa could face up to six months to two years in jail and up to a $1,000 fine.<\/p>\n<p>The bill&rsquo;s introduction came in the wake of Sunday&rsquo;s attack on Jews in Boulder, Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>Trump administration officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/immigration\/3428221\/boulder-terrorism-suspect-mohamed-soliman-illegal-immigrant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">disclosed<\/a> that the suspect, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, was illegally residing in the country after overstaying a visa.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/immigration\/3428221\/boulder-terrorism-suspect-mohamed-soliman-illegal-immigrant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">BORDER TERROR SUSPECT MOHAMED SABRY SOLIMAN IS ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT WHO ENTERED DURING BIDEN ADMINISTRATION<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Colorado Terrorist attack suspect,&nbsp;Mohamed Soliman, is illegally in our country,&rdquo; Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said in a&nbsp;Monday morning <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TriciaOhio\/status\/1929502616238653851\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">post<\/a>&nbsp;on X. &ldquo;He entered the country in August 2022 on a B2 visa that expired on February 2023.
