It also <a href=\"https:\/\/waysandmeans.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/The-One-Big-Beautiful-Bill-Section-by-Section.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hikes<\/a> the child tax credit from $2,000 to $2,500 per child.<\/p>\n<p>One of the more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-scorches-reporters-lie-immediately-exiting-meeting-house-republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">controversial provisions<\/a> is that the bill increases the federal tax deduction for state and local taxes from $10,000 to $40,000, which benefits those residing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gov-desantis-envisions-midterms-as-end-of-floridas-days-as-a-swing-state\/\" title=\"Gov. DeSantis Envisions Midterms as End of Florida\u2019s Days as a Swing State\">high-tax blue states<\/a> like New York, New Jersey, and California.<\/p>\n<p>It was a concession the Republican leadership made, and Trump supported, to gain backing for the bill from House Republicans representing those states.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans like Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Rand Paul of Kentucky have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/big-beautiful-bill-immediately-runs-into-trouble-in-senate-after-squeaking-through-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">come out against<\/a> the Big, Beautiful Bill in its current form, saying it adds too much to the national debt.<\/p>\n<p>The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget forecasted that it will add <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crfb.org\/blogs\/breaking-down-one-big-beautiful-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$3.1 trillion<\/a> to the debt over the next 10 years, on top of the current annual deficits forecasted.<\/p>\n<p>However, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent took exception with that calculation, arguing it does not factor in the economic growth that the policies in the bill will promote.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Bessent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bessent-lays-big-problem-cbos-cost-scoring-big-beautiful-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Fox News host Bill Hemmer when asked about the impact of the bill on yearly deficits that he was relying on estimates from the Congressional Budget Office.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You&rsquo;re referring to the CBO scoring, I believe, which is 10-year scoring, and it&rsquo;s D.C.-style scoring,&rdquo; Bessent said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We think we can grow the economy and control the debt. Last year, with the tax cuts largely in place, revenue was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/publication\/61185\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$4.9 trillion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The House Ways and Means Committee&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/waysandmeans.house.gov\/2024\/12\/09\/once-again-cbo-stacks-the-deck-against-tax-relief-for-american-families-and-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a> that in the five years after the TCJA&rsquo;s passage &ldquo;tax revenues averaged $170 billion per year above CBO&rsquo;s post-2017 projections.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Further, by fiscal year 2022, that figure was $884 billion higher.<\/p>\n<p>White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller said in a post on X last week that the Big, Beautiful Bill &ldquo;saves more than 1.6 TRILLION in mandatory spending, including the largest-ever welfare reform. A remarkable achievement. I&rsquo;ve also seen claims the bill increases the deficit.
