The alleged shooter, Elias Rodriguez, was reportedly motivated by anti-Semitic sentiments in support of Gaza, as he was heard shouting pro-Palestinian slogans when arrested. This incident evoked significant media attention, notably a controversial article from The Washington Post, which raised questions about the place of Jews in America post-October 7, 2023, the date of a violent attack on Israel.

Even though the article was based on a quote from a rabbi expressing confusion about safety as a Jew in the U.S., critics decried the framing of the question. Many commentators took issue with the implication that there was still uncertainty about Jewish belonging in America, raising concerns about anti-Semitism and the societal perceptions that allow such violence too occur. Despite subsequent retraction efforts by the newspaper, the fallout from the article and the tragic shooting highlighted ongoing tensions surrounding Jewish identity and safety in a climate of increasing division and hostility.

On the evening of May 21, Yaron Lischinsky, 30, and Sarah Lynn Milgrim, 26, both Israeli embassy staffers, were killed leaving an event at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C.

By all accounts, early on the morning of May 22, we knew who the alleged perpetrator was and what his motive was: 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez from Chicago, a leftist who apparently killed random Jews in support of Gaza. “Free, free Palestine!” he could be heard shouting as police took him into custody.

On May 23, The Washington Post was asking the really important questions: namely, “the confusion … about where Jews belong.”

Yes, you heard me right.
