the Thursday afternoon ruling from the appeals court said.<\/p>\n<p>Hours before the Federal Circuit&rsquo;s ruling, the Justice Department told the appeals court it would seek emergency relief from the Supreme Court as soon as Friday &ldquo;to avoid the irreparable national security and economic harms at stake,&rdquo; if the appeals court did not quickly pause the lower court&rsquo;s order.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >separate case challenging<\/a> the tariffs, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia also blocked Trump&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-opens-tariff-talks-with-south-korea-things-are-looking-good\/\" title=\"Trump opens tariff talks with South Korea: &#039;Things are looking good&#039;\">sweeping tariff policy<\/a>. The order, which only applied to the two plaintiffs, was immediately paused for 14 days, before it could take effect, to allow time for the Trump administration to appeal.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In the five decades since IEEPA was enacted, no President until now has ever invoked the statute &hellip; to impose tariffs,&rdquo; Judge Rudolph Contreras wrote in his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.dcd.279804\/gov.uscourts.dcd.279804.37.0_3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">33-page opinion<\/a>&nbsp;responding to a lawsuit from two small businesses in Illinois that sued the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This case is not about tariffs qua tariffs,&rdquo; he continued. &ldquo;It is about whether IEEPA enables the President to unilaterally impose, revoke, pause, reinstate, and adjust tariffs to reorder the global economy.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration quickly filed a notice that it will appeal the ruling to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
