It was classified as an X28 and overwhelmed NASA&rsquo;s sensors.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/the-sun-just-spit-out-the-strongest-solar-flares-of-2025-and-more-could-be-headed-toward-earth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Livescience<\/a>, radio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/nasa-warns-new-solar-storm-affect-us-canada-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blackouts<\/a> were reported in North and South America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia after the May 13 and May 14 flares.<\/p>\n<p>As the threat of solar flares disrupting Earth lingers, the Space Weather Operations, Research, and Mitigation task force held a planning exercise in May 2024 to see whether America is ready.<\/p>\n<div class=\"firefly-embed\"> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NASA warns solar flares could cause blackouts on Earth | Here's what that means\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FdnDieK3OLw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>One scenario participants tried to cope with included a &ldquo;solar superstorm&rdquo; that caused an &ldquo;internet apocalypse,&rdquo; leading to power grid disruptions across America and weeks-long blackouts along the East Coast, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-14735891\/Scientists-issue-urgent-warning-solar-storm-poised-cause-global-blackouts-travel-chaos-not-prepared.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daily Mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Railways and pipelines were also disrupted in this scenario.<\/p>\n<p>A report on the exercise hinted that America was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/us-issues-severe-geomagnetic-storm-watch-first-warning-almost-20-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not ready<\/a> by stressing that much more needs to be done to prepare.<\/p>\n<p>Participants lacked the &ldquo;space weather expertise&rdquo; necessary to &ldquo;translate the scientific information and determine what the specific impacts would be on Earth,&rdquo; the report said, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/22\/science\/scary-simulation-reveals-our-lack-of-preparedness-for-impending-solar-storm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Space weather is a complex subject and its potential impacts are not well understood outside of NOAA and NASA,&rdquo; the report said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There is a strong need to educate not only government and agency staff but the general public, as well,&rdquo; the report said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We just had the STRONGEST SOLAR FLARE of 2025!
