The accident took place on a Saturday while the ship was carrying 277 individuals, including cadets and officials. although most onboard managed to remain safe, 22 sustained injuries from the crash, which also caused the ship to lose all three of its masts.

In the wake of the collision, Mexican Navy Secretary Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed their condolences to the victims’ families. Investigations are currently underway by both Mexican authorities and the U.S. National Transportation Safety board (NTSB) to determine the cause of the accident. The NTSB has noted that its team is arriving in New York City to conduct a thorough investigation, involving experts in nautical operations and marine engineering.

The incident has sparked political discussion, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) suggesting that it may be linked to staffing issues within the U.S. Coast Guard. However, the department of Homeland Security refuted thes claims, stating that the Coast Guard has received adequate support and was not affected by hiring freezes.

After the crash, most of the passengers were transported back to Veracruz, Mexico, while the *Cuauhtémoc* itself remains in New York for inspection.

Two dead after Mexican naval ship crashes into Brooklyn Bridge

Two people are dead after a Mexican naval ship crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday.

There were 277 people on board the Cuauhtémoc ship when it made contact with the suspension bridge and snapped all three of its masts.
