This marks New Jersey’s first transit strike since 1983, affecting hundreds of thousands of commuters in the New York Metropolitan area. The labor dispute comes after the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers turned down a contract offer a month prior. Approximately 450 union members participated in the strike, which resulted in a complete suspension of NJ Transit rail services, including Metro-North service.

The union expressed frustration regarding wage negotiations, highlighting that despite NJ Transit’s financial resources for various projects, they have not allocated sufficient funds for front-line workers’ wages. NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri referred to the strike as a “pause” in negotiations and expressed a desire to continue discussions promptly. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy called for a fair and expedient resolution to the situation, recognizing its implications for commuters and taxpayers. The strike potentially impacts around 350,000 daily riders, underscoring the importance of the transit system within the region.

NJ Transit locomotive engineers union goes on strike early Friday morning

New Jersey Transit locomotive engineers went on strike early Friday morning after negotiations between the transportation company and union workers failed to produce a contract agreement.

It was Garden State’s first transit strike since 1983. Due to the work stoppage, hundreds of thousands of people in the New York Metropolitan area will have to find other means of transportation for their morning commute.
