This marks New Jersey’s first transit strike as 1983, considerably impacting daily commutes for hundreds of thousands in the New York Metropolitan area. The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and trainmen announced the strike shortly before a deadline for contract negotiations, which had reportedly stalled over issues related to wage increases. The union, supported by national leadership, has expressed frustration over NJ Transit’s funding priorities, highlighting the company’s financial resources for projects unrelated to front-line workers. The NJ Transit CEO has described the strike as a “pause” in negotiations, indicating a willingness to resume discussions instantly.Governor Phil Murphy emphasized the need for a prompt resolution that balances the needs of both employees and the fiscal realities facing New Jersey taxpayers. The strike could perhaps affect around 350,000 daily commuters who rely on NJ Transit services.

NJ Transit locomotive engineers union goes on strike early Friday morning

New Jersey Transit locomotive engineers went on strike early Friday morning as negotiations between the transportation company and union workers failed to produce a contract agreement.

It is the Garden State’s first transit strike since 1983.
