Trump&rsquo;s comments left open for interpretation whether he believes 80 percent is an interim level or a final goal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The weekend talks are not expected to produce a final deal, according to Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who said he is hoping for &ldquo;a foundation for something more.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent interview, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-democratic-congresswoman-loses-scott-bessent-hearing-shouts-chairman-2-minutes-straight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bessent<\/a> said the weekend talks will be a turning point, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/09\/economy\/china-tariff-trump-trade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;My sense is that this will be about de-escalation, not about the big trade deal &hellip; but we&rsquo;ve got to de-escalate before we can move forward,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;You know, 145 percent [tariffs], 125 percent, is the equivalent of an embargo. We don&rsquo;t want to decouple. What we want is fair trade,&rdquo; he said, noting the 125 percent tariff China slapped on American goods after Trump hit China with a 145 percent tariff.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/may\/09\/china-exports-beat-expectations-despite-slump-in-trade-with-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guardian<\/a>, Chinese exports to the United States dropped 17.6 percent in April.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Thursday, Trump said the tariff on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/china-folding-beijing-now-eying-talks-trump-administration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China<\/a> can only move in one direction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump said, he thought the weekend negotiations will be &ldquo;substantive&rdquo; and suggested it was possible the tariff rate could decline.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;We&rsquo;re going to see. Right now you can&rsquo;t get any higher. It&rsquo;s at 145 percent, so we know it&rsquo;s coming down.
