Policy\">removing trans-identifying individuals<\/a> from the military. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Here at the Defense Department, we continue to relentlessly pursue the president&rsquo;s agenda, especially on readiness,&rdquo; Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecDef\/status\/1920592223147540887\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> in a video message.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-196978441\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2025\/May\/08\/2003706668\/-1\/-1\/1\/IMPLEMENTING-POLICY-ON-PRIORITIZING-MILITARY-EXCELLENCE-AND-READINESS.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">agency memo<\/a> released Thursday lays out deadlines for service members who have a &ldquo;current diagnosis or history of, or exhibit symptoms consistent with, gender dysphoria&rdquo; to voluntarily separate from the service. Under the directive, the voluntary separation deadline is extended to June 6 for active-duty members and July 7 for reservists. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Additionally, the Military Departments will immediately begin processing for separation Service members who previously self-identified for voluntary separation prior to March 26, 2025,&rdquo; the memo reads.<\/p>\n<p>An estimated 1,000 troops &ldquo;who have self-identified as being diagnosed with gender dysphoria will begin the voluntary separation process,&rdquo; according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/Releases\/Release\/Article\/4179340\/statement-by-chief-pentagon-spokesman-and-senior-advisor-sean-parnell-on-implem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Defense Department<\/a>. Hegseth <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecDef\/status\/1920592223147540887\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signaled<\/a> that those diagnosed with the disorder could &ldquo;eventually&rdquo; be &ldquo;involuntarily&rdquo; separated, or removed, from service should they decline to voluntarily leave.<\/p>\n<p>Military specialists have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/12\/05\/iowa-sen-joni-ernst-endorsed-transgender-military-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">long highlighted<\/a>&nbsp;the negative effect authorizing Americans who identify as &ldquo;transgender&rdquo; to serve has on military readiness.<\/p>\n<p>As noted by Hegseth, the new guidance is part of the Pentagon&rsquo;s compliance with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/prioritizing-military-excellence-and-readiness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">executive order<\/a> signed by President Trump in January.<\/p>\n<p>That directive declared that the &ldquo;medical, surgical, and mental health constraints on individuals with gender dysphoria&rdquo; is &ldquo;inconsistent&rdquo; with the &ldquo;high standards for troop readiness, lethality, cohesion, honesty, humility, uniformity, and integrity.&rdquo; It further ordered the secretary of defense to update the military&rsquo;s medical standards within 60 days of the edict&rsquo;s issuance to reflect the president&rsquo;s guidance, which Hegseth <a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2025\/May\/08\/2003706668\/-1\/-1\/1\/IMPLEMENTING-POLICY-ON-PRIORITIZING-MILITARY-EXCELLENCE-AND-READINESS.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">began to do<\/a> in early February. <\/p>\n<p>The Pentagon&rsquo;s efforts to remove trans-identifying troops from the military were stymied following the issuance of an injunction by a Washington-based district court judge in <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2025\/04\/24\/trump-admin-asks-supreme-court-to-let-it-enforce-transgender-military-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">late March<\/a>. The injunction and denial of immediate relief from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals prompted the Trump administration to file an <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/04\/24\/trump-admin-asks-scotus-to-block-lower-court-injunction-on-military-trans-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emergency application<\/a> with the Supreme Court seeking to temporarily stay the injunction while proceedings continued in the lower courts.<\/p>\n<p>The high court <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/05\/06\/scotus-blocks-lower-court-injunction-on-trump-admins-military-trans-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">granted<\/a> the administration&rsquo;s request on Tuesday.
