Don Bacon (R-NE) had signaled he would vote against the bill earlier this week, calling the legislative effort &ldquo;juvenile.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We&rsquo;re the United States of America. We&rsquo;re not Kaiser Wilhelm&rsquo;s Germany or Napoleon&rsquo;s France. I just &mdash; we&rsquo;re better than this. It just sounds like a sophomore thing to do,&rdquo; Bacon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/06\/politics\/gulf-of-america-resistance-house-republicans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">told<\/a> CNN.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation calls for &ldquo;any reference in a law, map, regulation, document, paper, or other record of the United States to the Gulf of Mexico shall be deemed to be a reference to the &lsquo;Gulf of America.&rsquo;&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>It also directs the secretary of the interior to oversee the changing of the name in federal documents and maps, and it must be done by federal agencies no later than 180 days after the legislation is passed.<\/p>\n<p>Trump&rsquo;s decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico sparked controversy within the press corps, after the <em>Associated Press <\/em>declined to change its stylebook to acknowledge Trump&rsquo;s renaming of the Gulf. In response, the Trump administration barred the outlet from the Oval Office and kicked off a back-and-forth court battle over the First Amendment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/3398545\/four-factions-mike-johnson-must-please-pass-trump-budget-megabill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>THE FOUR FACTIONS SPEAKER JOHNSON MUST PLEASE TO PASS TRUMP&rsquo;S BUDGET MEGABILL<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A lower court judge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/ap-wins-access-to-white-house-events-after-judge-rules-government-cant-bar-its-journalists#:~:text=A%20federal%20judge%20ordered%20the,the%20content%20of%20its%20speech.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">ruled in favor<\/a> of the <em>AP<\/em>, finding that the government&rsquo;s actions violated the First Amendment and constituted &ldquo;viewpoint discrimination.&rdquo; The Trump administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/media-telecom\/trump-takes-fight-with-ap-over-white-house-access-us-appeals-court-2025-04-17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">appealed the court&rsquo;s decision<\/a> but has continued to restrict the outlet&rsquo;s access to some events.<\/p>\n<p>The bill faces an uphill battle in the Senate, where Republicans need to meet a 60-vote threshold, or the filibuster.
