This initiative follows observations about the increasing number of generals in recent decades and the need for a more efficient military structure that enhances strategic readiness and operational effectiveness.

Hegseth emphasizes that this effort is not punitive but aims to maximize military readiness, contrasting the current makeup of military leadership with that during World War II, when a larger troop count was managed with fewer leaders. The article also notes that there is ongoing debate about the appropriate number of high-ranking officers in the military. Ultimately, the initiative reflects a push for greater efficiency and innovation within the armed forces as they prepare for future challenges.

    Read more…

During World War II — The number of four-star generals and admirals, in particular, has swelled significantly over the past few decades, the study found. Those in four-star positions typically have roles overseeing large organizations as well as extensive education. They also have broad military experience, often in combat.

Again, this is why Hegseth’s nomination was embraced by conservatives when he emerged as the most unlikely of Donald Trump’s cabinet picks. Say what you will about Signalgate — Jeffrey Goldberg certainly did, and will continue to for as long as he can dine out on it — the importance of bringing in a rank-and-file vet who wasn’t in the Pentagon hierarchy or the military-industrial complex blob was crucial to reforming all that has gone wrong with American military readiness.

Wokeness is the component most cited as problematic by Republicans, but it’s hardly the only problem: Other institutions in a decadent liberalist state may be able to function by bloating the number of elites in proportion to the regular riff-raff, but that is profoundly unsustainable with the military, the one institution which is necessary to defend a state’s very existence and requires both a certain egalitarian cohesion in the ranks and a hell of a large cohesive whole to deter and repel enemies.

Especially in an era of increased communication and technology, there’s no reason why we need exponentially more top generals to coordinate military action than we did during World War II, where the very existence of free and democratic life was jeopardized on not one but two fronts against enemies which started the conflict with a considerable advantage in strength over us.

There is an expedient reason for it — which is that in a bureaucratic aristocracy, the more bureaucratic aristocrats you have on the inside, the fewer questioning folks will debate the wisdom of the inner rings of power. You end up with too many chiefs and not enough Indians. This is why the chiefs raised no questions over the fact the former secretary of Defense came directly from the board of Raytheon — one of them, in other words — but raised hell over the fact the current one came from a veterans’ activist group and Fox News, where he covered the military, among other things.

That’s because, inter alia, they knew what was coming: “Less Generals, More GIs.” The fact they fought it so hard should tell you a great deal, too, about how much they really care about the defense of this country.

       * Name

       *

      * Message

* All fields are required.

Success!

       function firefly_sc() { if( typeof window.captchaPublicKey==typeof undefined ){ console.error('window.captchaPublicKey is not defined'); } grecaptcha.execute( window.captchaPublicKey, { action: 'submit_correction' } ).then( function( token ) { var opts={ action: 'firefly_sc_submit', name: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="name"]' ).value, : document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name=""]' ).value, message: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="message"]' ).value, post_id: firefly_post_id, cap_token: token } var inputs=[ 'name', '', 'message' ]; for( var i=0; i <inputs.length; i++ ) if( ! In contrast, the current Pentagon has 2.1 million personnel under the command of 44 four-star generals and admirals. Hegseth criticized what he termed “bloated headquarters elements” and announced a new initiative called “Less Generals, More GIs.” Officially titled “General and Flag Officer Reductions,” this plan aims for at least a 20% cut in four-star generals and admirals—the highest military ranks—and an additional 10% reduction across all ranks within the armed forces, including active duty members and those in the National Guard.

The Washington Post reported that it remains uncertain whether Hegseth plans to gradually eliminate these positions or swiftly remove those currently occupying them. His staff did not respond to inquiries about how quickly these cuts might be implemented amid recent efforts by the Pentagon to limit public communication through media channels. However, Hegseth clarified his intentions in a social media video: “More generals and admirals does not equal more success.” He emphasized that this initiative is not intended as a punitive measure against high-ranking officers but rather part of a thoughtful process aimed at enhancing strategic readiness and operational effectiveness through sensible reductions in general officer ranks.

The memo asserts that America must become “the most lethal fighting force in the world,” achieving this through improved efficiency, innovation, and preparedness for future challenges. Even The Washington Post acknowledged there are valid reasons behind this decision: over 800 generals and admirals currently serve across U.S. military branches—a number that has significantly increased over recent decades according to research from the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service.

Hegseth’s appointment was welcomed by conservatives who viewed him as an outsider capable of addressing issues within American military readiness—issues exacerbated by excessive elitism within bureaucratic structures. The argument posits that while other institutions may function with inflated numbers of elites compared to regular personnel, such an approach is unsustainable for a military essential for national defense which requires cohesion among its ranks.

In light of advancements in communication technology since World War II—when free democratic life faced threats on multiple fronts—there’s no justification for needing more top-level commanders than before when coordinating military actions effectively can be achieved with fewer leaders. This bureaucratic aristocracy leads to fewer individuals questioning decisions made by those at higher levels; thus creating an environment where too many leaders exist without enough ground-level personnel engaged critically with policy decisions.

The resistance from some quarters regarding Hegseth’s reforms indicates their true priorities concerning national defense amidst calls for “Less Generals, More GIs.”

[33651
15016,3998,50402,4505
post-2431773","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-bureaucracy","tag-defense","tag-leadership-2","tag-military
["GET
