Nothing could be further from the truth,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, Hegseth characterized the reductions as a &ldquo;deliberative process, working with the joint chiefs with one goal: maximizing strategic readiness and operational effectiveness by making prudent reductions.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hegseth released a <a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2025\/May\/05\/2003704210\/-1\/-1\/1\/MEMORANDUM-DIRECTING-GENERAL-AND-FLAG-OFFICER-REDUCTIONS.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">memo<\/a> summarizing his plan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said the two-step process will result in a 20 percent cut in the number of four-star generals and flag officers in the active-duty component of the military, accompanied by a 20 percent cut in those ranks in the National Guard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step two, he said, is a 10 percent cut in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/hegseth-hits-back-sec-def-nominees-top-5-comebacks-tuesdays-confirmation-hearing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">generals and flag officers<\/a> across the military and a realignment of the Unified Command Plan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;This is gonna be, we think, the most comprehensive review since the Goldwater Nichols Defense Reorganization Act,&rdquo; Hegseth said in the video.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As noted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/05\/05\/pentagon-officer-cuts-00329990\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Politico<\/a>, the bill Hegseth referenced was approved in 1986. The site noted that proposals to comply with the new directive include &ldquo;consolidating the European and Africa commands &mdash; both run by four-star generals &mdash; and combining the Northern and Southern commands.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;We cannot afford to wait,&rdquo; Hegseth said, citing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-signs-fisa-extension-into-law-after-race-to-avoid-lapse\/\" title=\"Biden rushes to prevent lapse, signs FISA extension into law\">global threat environment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;We got to be lean and mean.
