Kevin Dalton (@TheKevinDalton) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheKevinDalton\/status\/1912680372531511783?\">April 17, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Many of the animals are seen experiencing seizures as they wash ashore, the San Jose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2025\/05\/02\/just-bodies-of-animals-everywhere-toxic-algae-bloom-taking-a-toll-on-marine-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mercury News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Marine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/national-park-issues-strong-warning-realizing-visitors-rescue-not-guaranteed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rescue<\/a> groups have been busy trying to nurse some of the animals back to health, but they&rsquo;re not always successful.<\/p>\n<p>An estimated 700 sea lions and over 200 dolphins have been found suffering from the problem. &ldquo;While some pinnipeds have been successfully treated and released, domoic acid poisoning is almost always fatal for dolphins,&rdquo; the Mercury News reported.<\/p>\n<p>Justin Viezbicke, coordinator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration&rsquo;s California stranding network, told the Mercury News,&nbsp;&ldquo;So far this is the largest and most intense algal bloom since I&rsquo;ve been here.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;All of our facilities are really full, and the staff and the volunteers have been going for months now.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>SeaWorld San Diego also has a rescue team working feverishly to help the suffering animals.<\/p>\n<p>The region has always experienced toxic algae blooms, but human impacts &mdash; including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/letitia-james-files-bonkers-lawsuit-pepsico-plastic-pollution-littering-consumers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pollution<\/a> from industrial run-off, fertilizer, and sewage &mdash; have magnified its negative effects, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/harmful-algal-blooms\/about\/harmful-algal-blooms-contributing-factors-and-impacts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&rsquo;s rare for humans to be affected by domoic acid, according to scientists, but they are susceptible to amnesic shellfish poisoning affected by some types of blooms and large quantities of the toxin ingested.<\/p>\n<p>That can cause hallucinations, confusion, and memory loss, as the name implies.
