It was known for its extreme seclusion, as it sits atop an island over 1 mile from the coast of San Francisco. During its nearly 30 years of operation, no one has been recorded as having successfully escaped from Alcatraz, despite numerous attempts by prisoners.<\/p>\n<p>The closure of the prison was attributed to the expensive costs of maintaining it, with <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">steep daily operating costs compared<\/a> to other federal prisons, along with millions of dollars needed for renovations and upkeep.
