The state dropped the lawsuit in exchange for a commitment from the USDA to not <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">illegally freeze funds directed<\/a> to Maine&#8217;s Department of Education, which are largely used for the child Nutrition Program. The dispute arose when USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins alleged that Maine was not complying with Title IX regulations concerning transgender policies. Judge John Woodcock had previously ruled in favor of Maine,stating that the USDA&#8217;s actions were unlawful. The federal funds were allocated largely to the Child Nutrition Program, which funds various school lunch programs, Maine attorneys said.<\/p>\n<p>Judge John Woodcock, an appointee of former President George W. Bush, previously ruled in Maine&rsquo;s favor by granting a restraining order. He said the USDA&rsquo;s actions were &ldquo;contrary to law, for multiple reasons,&rdquo; including because Secretary Brooke Rollins did not follow legal procedures required to stop the funding.<\/p>\n<p>Rollins agreed on Friday to &ldquo;refrain from freezing, terminating, or otherwise interfering with the state of Maine&rsquo;s access&rdquo; to USDA funds, &ldquo;based on alleged violations of Title IX without first following all legally required procedures,&rdquo; the agreement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maine.gov\/ag\/news\/article.shtml?id=13179940\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">read<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rollins accused Maine in April of flouting Title IX, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nancy-pelosi-mocked-after-bragging-she-told-ukraine-president-zelensky-that-billie-jean-king-sends-her-regards\/\" title=\"Nancy Pelosi Mocked After Bragging She Told Ukraine President Zelensky that Billie Jean King Sends Her Regards\">prohibits sex-based discrimination<\/a> in education, and said she was pausing all USDA funding to the state because of it. Upon taking office, President Donald Trump interpreted Title IX to exclude gender identity after former President Joe Biden reinterpreted the law to include it.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is only the beginning, though you are free to end it at any time by protecting women and girls in compliance with federal law,&rdquo; Rollins wrote in a letter to Gov. Janet Mills (D-ME).<\/p>\n<p>The letter came as part of a broader dispute that arose in February, when Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uIfS1574DAk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">chided<\/a> Mills during a luncheon over Title IX after a transgender pole vaulter in Maine won a girls state competition. Mills&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wgme.com\/news\/local\/governor-janet-mills-blasts-president-donald-trump-in-first-major-interview-since-start-of-legal-battle-trans-athletes-lgbtq?photo=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;local news there were &ldquo;maybe two&rdquo; transgender athletes in her state.<\/p>\n<p>The funding freeze was not Maine&rsquo;s only legal battle with the Trump administration.
