And his 1995 production &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0112573\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Braveheart<\/a>,&rdquo; which Gibson starred in, directed, and produced, is one of the best known films of the decade.<\/p>\n<p>The 21st century saw Gibson reaching new heights with 2004&rsquo;s &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0335345\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Passion of the Christ<\/a>.&rdquo; But it also saw new lows, including a 2006 DUI arrest where he spouted anti-Semitic comments to the arresting officer and a 2011 conviction for misdemeanor battery over a fight with his then-partner and mother of his daughter, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/mel-gibson-controversies-timeline-antisemitism-dui-2023-10#gibson-made-racist-remarks-in-a-conversation-with-his-ex-girlfriend-oksana-grigorieva-in-2010-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Business Insider<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gibson pleaded &ldquo;no contest&rdquo; to the charge, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/03\/12\/business\/media\/12gibson.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a> reported at the time, and received 36 months probation. The conviction also meant Gibson lost his rights to possessing a firearm, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/11\/us\/mel-gibson-gun-misdemeanor.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Times<\/a> noted in a March report.<\/p>\n<p>The conviction was vacated in 2014 after Gibson completed probation, the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/general-news-movies-932837f84d6b437fb91d89b33db2db78\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Associated Press<\/a> reported at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Gibson quit drinking after the 2010 incident and in 2020 celebrated 10 years of sobriety, <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/movies\/mel-gibson-sober-10-years-alcoholics-anonymous-hacksaw-ridge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">People<\/a> magazine reported at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Gibson&rsquo;s legal situation was back in the news because a Justice Department pardon attorney, Elizabeth G. Oyer, was fired after she declined to add Gibson to a list of Americans whose gun rights should be restored, according to the Times.<\/p>\n<p>Oyer has challenged her firing. At an April 7 congressional hearing, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/04\/30\/mel-gibson-gun-rights-restored-doj\/83353500007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Today<\/a>, she testified, &ldquo;I had been asked to recommend restoring the firearm rights of a famous friend of the president who had lost his right to own a gun due to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nj-lawmaker-admits-gun-control-bill-has-nothing-to-do-with-criminals\/\" title=\"NJ Lawmaker Admits Gun Control Bill Has Nothing to Do With Criminals\">domestic violence conviction<\/a>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I declined to do so based on concerns about public safety.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>That &ldquo;famous friend of the president&rdquo; was Gibson, USA Today reported. And Bondi clearly disagreed with Oyer.<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Register notice contains no explanation about Gibson specifically, but noted that under federal law, the U.S. attorney general has the power to restore gun rights &ldquo;if it is established to [the Attorney General&rsquo;s] &hellip; satisfaction that the circumstances regarding the disability, and the applicant&rsquo;s record and reputation, are such that the applicant will not be likely to act in a manner dangerous to public safety and that the granting of the relief would not be contrary to the public interest.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Included in those 10 names with Gibson, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/04\/30\/us-news\/mel-gibson-nfl-hall-of-famer-have-gun-rights-restored-after-decades-old-crimes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a> noted, was former New York Jet and NFL Hall of Famer Joseph Klecko.
