Carville, known for his pivotal role in Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign, labels Hogg’s strategy “insane” and “abominable,” arguing that party members should focus on defeating Republicans rather than fighting among themselves. Hogg counters by advocating for a more aggressive Democratic approach, dismissing Carville’s outlook as outdated. Throughout the discussion, both figures highlight generational tensions within the Democratic Party, reflecting differing views on strategy and the future direction of the party. Ultimately, the exchange illustrates the challenges and disagreements present within the DNC as it navigates electoral strategies and party cohesion.

There is nothing more entertaining — for a Republican, anyhow — than watching two angry Democrats go at each other. It’s particularly edifying when one’s an old Democrat, the other is a younger one, and the topic is the future of the party.

Usually, these fights happen in backrooms or among pundits who don’t actually wield any power. Thus, what made this one edifying times a hundred was the fact that one was the most powerful Democratic political consultant for many a year and the other is now the vice chair of the Democratic National Committee.

The former is James Carville, the “Ragin’ Cajun” best remembered for coining Bill Clinton’s catch-phrase “It’s the economy, stupid” during the 1992 presidential election. However, he’s already rubbing people the wrong way after he announced that, with the help of his outside political organization, he’d be spending $20 million on defeating older, moderate Democrats in blue districts, something the DNC immediately took him to task for.

So did Carville, even though the octogenarian has joined the punditry class himself. In multiple appearances on cable news this week, Carville lambasted Hogg, calling the 25-year-old a “contemptible little twerp” and saying the plan was the “most insane thing” he’d heard.

“Does he really think the problem that we‘re facing in the United States today is because we got 65-year-old Democrats in office? I’m not going to make any baseless accusations of violent behavior here, I’m just saying there’s a slight but real possibility MGM Studios is still paying Carville royalties for using that idea.

Instead, let’s pay attention to the problem that, if you call James Carville out like that, there’s the very real possibility you, David Hogg, will actually have to face him and explain yourself. He did, on “The Tara Palmeri Show” podcast Wednesday. Remotely, I might add. Remember that whole “Road House” thing.

It didn’t matter, since he still ended up, intellectually speaking, looking for all the world like one of the roughly 436 toughs Swayze dispensed during that aforementioned 1989 cinematic masterpiece.

When Palmeri noted that Carville had said Hogg should be sued for breaching his fiduciary duty to the DNC — i.e., don’t destroy the elected members of the party you were elected to serve — Carville said, “I think it is abominable that an official of a political party who is being paid or supported by that political party to go out and raise money to defeat members of the same party.

“I think that’s jacka**ery of the highest level,” he added. “I’m not into beating Democrats; I’m into beating Republicans. Typically, these disputes occur behind closed doors or among commentators without real influence. What made this particular confrontation even more enlightening was that one participant was a long-time influential Democratic consultant while the other currently serves as vice chair of the Democratic National Committee. The former is James Carville, known for coining Bill Clinton’s famous phrase “It’s the economy, stupid” during the 1992 presidential campaign. The latter is activist David Hogg, who has transitioned from general activism to focusing on Democratic Party initiatives but has recently stirred controversy by pledging $20 million to unseat older moderate Democrats in blue districts—a move that drew criticism from both the DNC and Carville himself.

In various cable news appearances this week, Carville criticized Hogg harshly, labeling him a “contemptible little twerp” and denouncing his plan as “the most insane thing” he had ever heard. Carville questioned whether Hogg truly believed that having 65-year-old Democrats in office was America’s primary issue and suggested he should target Republicans instead.

Hogg responded by accusing Carville of advocating for a timid approach to politics while asserting that people want bold action from their party right now. Despite being young enough to think of Carville as someone who embodies timidity in politics—an ironic stance given Carville’s history—Hogg faced off with him on “The Tara Palmeri Show” podcast where they debated their differing views.

Carville maintained his position firmly during their discussion about Hogg’s strategy to raise funds against fellow Democrats rather than Republicans. He expressed disdain for such actions within party ranks and emphasized that resources should be directed toward defeating Republicans instead.

While Hogg attempted to argue there were nuances in his approach, Carville dismissed this notion outright and reiterated his belief that it was fundamentally wrong to use funds meant for defeating Republicans against fellow Democrats.

Later on social media after speaking with Hogg, however, Carville acknowledged Hogg’s fighting spirit but still implied he lacked depth compared to historical figures like Ulysses S.
