However, economists argue that the underlying data presents a more favorable picture. While consumer spending rose at a slower rate than in previous quarters,it still indicates strength in demand.

The decline in GDP is attributed to tariff-induced changes in trade behavior, with businesses importing large quantities of goods to avoid tariffs, which negatively impacted the GDP figures. Economists suggest that the decline may exaggerate the perceived weakness of the economy. Key indicators, such as a ample rise in business investment and a decrease in government spending, offer a more positive outlook. Analysts predict that the effects of high imports in Q1 will lead to a rebound in GDP growth in subsequent quarters.

While some media outlets and Democrats have seized on the slight decline in the Gross Domestic Product for the first quarter as proof that President Donald Trump’s economic plans are not working, economists see good news in the underlying data.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the GDP — the value of goods and services produced across the U.S. economy — fell at an annual rate of 0.3 percent from January to March.

“Consumer spending, the economy’s main engine, rose at a 1.8% pace in the first quarter, the smallest increase since mid-2023.
