Tillis highlighted Martin&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">controversial past statements<\/a>, especially his defense of individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol riot. Although Tillis stopped short of entirely rejecting Martin&#8217;s nomination, he emphasized the need for due diligence in assessing Martin&#8217;s public comments. However, he stopped short of saying he&rsquo;s out on him altogether.<\/p>\n<p>Tillis cited Martin&rsquo;s past controversial statements and his defense of those who participated in the Jan. 6 riot as reasons for concern, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AndrewDesiderio\/status\/1917614488175472650\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">according<\/a> to <em>Punchbowl News. <\/em>Martin, who refers to himself as &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3340936\/who-is-ed-martin-dc-top-prosecutor-trump-lawyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Ed the Eagle<\/a>,&rdquo; has had his nomination <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/3368007\/adam-schiff-ruben-gallego-hold-up-trump-nominees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">held up in the Senate<\/a> by Sen. I&rsquo;m not going to say I&rsquo;m a &lsquo;no&rsquo; now. I&rsquo;m going to say: I&rsquo;m concerned with some of his public comments &hellip; particularly on Jan. 6,&rdquo; Tillis <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MacFarlaneNews\/status\/1917634053395595704\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">said<\/a>, per CBS News.<\/p>\n<p>Martin has been acting U.S. attorney for Washington since Trump&rsquo;s inauguration. He called himself &ldquo;Trump&rsquo;s lawyer,&rdquo; running counter to the actual duties of the role.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He has faced more scrutiny in recent weeks after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3383080\/dc-us-attorney-ed-martin-undeclared-russian-state-media-appearances\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">failing to disclose<\/a> more than 150 appearances on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/russia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Russian<\/a> state media. He defended <em>Russia Today<\/em> after the U.S. State Department characterized it as propaganda from the Kremlin.<\/p>\n<p>In response to a number of questions sent to him by members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Martin refused to acknowledge the violence on Jan. 6, 2021, did not directly answer if he believed in the claim the 2020 election was stolen, and did not definitively say Trump could not run for a third term, according to a recent CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/29\/politics\/kfile-ed-martin-senate-judiciary-committee-controversial-comments\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">report<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the questioning, he was asked if he ever equated a Democratic lawmaker to Adolf Hitler. He responded, &ldquo;I do not recall doing so.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>However, in an October 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/pseagles\/wynk-bidens-fascist-authoritarianism-october-20-2022-proamericareport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">episode<\/a> of his own podcast, Martin said, &ldquo;President Joe Biden is Hitler.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There&rsquo;s only one character on the world stage right now who actually is utilizing some of the techniques, maybe many of them that were used by people like Hitler and by Hitler himself. And that&rsquo;s Joe Biden,&rdquo; Martin said.<\/p>\n<p>Some former staff in the U.S. Attorney&rsquo;s Office in D.C. have criticized him for dismissing prosecutors who handled cases involving Jan. 6 rioters.
