These employees, who oversee essential programs related to coal miners&#8217; health and firefighter safety, will return to work until June 2. their reinstatement comes amid local advocacy from Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), who emphasized the need for these roles to benefit her constituents. While the American Federation of government Employees Local 3430 welcomed the return of these employees, they noted that the rehired positions were primarily those highlighted in current media discussions. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has acknowledged past mistakes regarding the layoffs, indicating that a portion of the workforce may be reinstated in the future. However, they remain on the &ldquo;reduction in force&rdquo; list and will only work until June 2. They are in charge of research, outreach, and intervention regarding workplace injuries and harm.<\/p>\n<p>Most of NIOSH&rsquo;s 1,000-person workforce was laid off. Its union, American Federation of Government Employees Local 3430, celebrated that &ldquo;vital initiatives&rdquo; were reinstated but suggested in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo?fbid=996235159329899&amp;set=pcb.996235329329882\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"press release\">press release<\/a> that the Trump administration chose to rehire positions &ldquo;currently in the media spotlight.&rdquo; The release outlined how reinstating the entire workforce could result in cost savings across disability payments from Social Security, insurance claims, and healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) lobbied HHS to rehire people in positions specifically for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-president-trump-gives-pardons-to-73-individuals-and-commutes-another-70-sentences-steve-bannon-is-included\/\" title=\"BREAKING: President Trump Gives Pardons to 73 Individuals and Commutes Another 70 Sentences \u2013 Steve Bannon Is Included\">coal industry<\/a> to benefit her constituents in Morgantown. The agency had its own office there.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;NIOSH is not just a research institution &mdash; it is a public health and economic engine,&rdquo; AFGE Local 3430 President Cathy Tinney-Zara said. &ldquo;Again, we commend Senator Capito for recognizing the immense value of NIOSH and the urgent need to preserve its operations. Kennedy estimated that some 20% would be reinstated.<\/p>\n<p>Other federal agencies have also opted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3328175\/fda-usda-agencies-rehire-federal-workers-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"rehire\">rehire<\/a> employees, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Nuclear Security Administration, Food and Drug Administration, Indian Health Service, and Bonneville Power Administration.
