A subsequent study revealed that the rate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-irreversible-consequences-of-school-closures\/\" title=\"The Irreversible Consequences of School Closures\">severe complications<\/a> from the drug is at least 22 times higher than the FDA&#8217;s current claims. The researchers called for the reinstatement of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/why-the-latest-abortion-pill-ruling-is-both-good-and-bad-for-pro-lifers\/\" title=\"Why The Latest ... Ruling Is Both Good And Bad For Pro-Lifers\">original safety protocols<\/a> and a thorough investigation into the drug&#8217;s risks. In response to these findings, Senator Josh Hawley urged Makary to take immediate action to restore essential safeguards for women&#8217;s health. Despite previous inquiries regarding mifepristone&#8217;s approval during Makary&#8217;s confirmation, the FDA has not definitively addressed weather it will review the recent study&#8217;s implications. An FDA spokeswoman emphasized the agency&#8217;s commitment to public health and evidence-based evaluation.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Martin Makary&rsquo;s deeply rooted belief in data-based decision making could be put to the test after a new study found that mifepristone, the drug responsible for more than half of the nation&rsquo;s abortions, is more dangerous than previously known. <\/p>\n<p>Makary <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NewsHour\/status\/1915541748408799706\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told PBS&rsquo; Amna Nawaz<\/a> at Semafor&rsquo;s World Economy Summit over the weekend that &ldquo;I have no plans to take action on mifepristone.&rdquo; He did, however, hint that &ldquo;here is an ongoing set of data that is coming into the FDA on mifepristone&rdquo; that could change the agency&rsquo;s position on the pill. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;So, if the data suggests something or tells us that there&rsquo;s a real signal, we can&rsquo;t promise we&rsquo;re not going to act on that data,&rdquo; Makary continued. <\/p>\n<p>Four days later, a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/04\/28\/study-rate-of-serious-or-life-threatening-complications-after-abortion-pill-is-22-times-higher-than-fda-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new study<\/a> showed that the rate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/abortion-pill-complication-rate-22-times-higher-than-fda-claims\/\" title=\"... Complication Rate 22 Times Higher Than ... Claims\">life-threatening complications due<\/a> to mifepristone is at least 22 times higher than what the FDA and Danco Laboratories, the manufacturer of the drug, indicate on its label.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, who successfully completed the &ldquo;largest known study of the abortion pill,&rdquo; emphasized that the &ldquo;FDA should reinstate the original patient safety protocols that were required when mifepristone was first approved.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The study&rsquo;s conclusion also noted the FDA should &ldquo;further investigate the harm this drug causes to women and, based on objective safety criteria, reconsider its approval altogether.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Women deserve better than the abortion pill,&rdquo; the researchers wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The same day the study was published, Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HawleyMO\/status\/1916937209350852747\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sent a letter<\/a> to Makary urging the FDA head to &ldquo;follow this new data and take all appropriate action to restore critical safeguards on the use of mifepristone.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The time to act is now,&rdquo;&nbsp;he wrote, noting that the &ldquo;health and safety of American women depend on it.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This isn&rsquo;t the first time Makary has encountered questions about the status of mifepristone under his leadership<\/p>\n<p>During the FDA chief&rsquo;s confirmation hearing, Republican senators repeatedly demanded to know whether Makary would consider reevaluating mifepristone&rsquo;s approval status and the expansions made by the Obama and Biden administration. Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Chairman Bill Cassidy<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AlannaVagianos\/status\/1897666642647175389\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> explicitly asked<\/a> Makary to restore abortion pill safeguards such as <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RxRegA\/status\/1897691094818656388\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">requiring an in-person<\/a> visit to obtain a mifepristone prescription.<\/p>\n<p>Makary repeatedly claimed he would look at the data and go from there. <\/p>\n<p>The Federalist pressed the FDA over whether its chief has plans to review the new study&rsquo;s findings and &ldquo;take action,&rdquo; per his recent comments. <\/p>\n<p>An FDA spokeswoman did not directly answer The Federalist&rsquo;s questions, but claimed the agency is &ldquo;committed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/maine-to-ban-forever-chemicals-in-food-packaging\/\" title=\"Maine to prohibit &#039;forever chemicals&#039; in ... packaging.\">safeguarding public health<\/a> by ensuring the safety, efficacy, and quality of the products it regulates.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The agency rigorously evaluates the latest scientific data, leveraging gold standard science to make informed decisions,&rdquo; she continued. &ldquo;With a steadfast focus on protecting consumers, the FDA applies a balanced, science-based approach while incorporating practical, common-sense considerations to its regulatory processes.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Jordan Boyd is a staff writer at The Federalist and producer of The Federalist Radio Hour.
