Kettl, professor emeritus and the former dean of the University of Maryland&rsquo;s School of Public Policy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/24\/us\/politics\/trump-executive-order-federal-workers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">told the<\/a> <em>New York Times<\/em>. &ldquo;The administration has been looking for ways to cut probationary employees, and this puts more power in the hands of agency managers.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Office of Special Counsel, which governs federal workers&rsquo; rights, dropped its inquiry into more than 2,000 complaints&nbsp;from fired probationary workers earlier this week. It said it could not pursue the claims because they were not fired for cause but as part of a &ldquo;governmentwide effort to reduce the federal service.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the Supreme Court halted a judge&rsquo;s order barring the Trump administration from firing thousands of federal workers.<\/p>\n<p>Probationary workers were among the first federal workers targeted by the Trump administration in its attempts to reduce the federal workforce and, in turn, save money.
