These bills aim to restore local control, which was previously diminished when the Michigan Public Service commission was given sole decision-making power over such projects under energy legislation passed in 2023. House Speaker Pro Tem Rachele Smith emphasized the importance of local governance, highlighting that decisions should be made by elected officials who understand their communities. The recent bills signify a meaningful move by Republicans to reverse what they view as an overreach by Democrats, who dominated the legislature when the control shift occurred. The proposed legislation aims to allow communities to have a say in energy projects once again, thereby enhancing local governance and autonomy.

Push for local control of green energy projects moves forward

(The Center Square) – Local officials in Michigan could soon have a say in large-scale renewable energy projects planned for their communities.

A series of bills passed the House Energy Committee on Tuesday and are headed to the full chamber for a vote.
