The bill, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ethics-watchdog-calls-for-probe-into-house-democrat-kim-schriers-stock-transactions\/\" title=\"Ethics Watchdog Calls for Probe into House Democrat Kim Schrier&#039;s Stock Transactions\">received substantial bipartisan support<\/a> with an 84-6 vote, aims to establish a Psilocybin Production Establishment Licensing Board within the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services. This board will be responsible for creating guidelines for the management of psilocybin as a treatment option for various mental health conditions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/us-includes-controversial-cluster-munitions-in-aid-package-to-ukraine-for-second-time\/\" title=\"US includes controversial cluster munitions in aid to Ukraine again.\">including post-traumatic stress disorder<\/a> (PTSD) and depression, as amended from the original legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Proponents, including State Rep. Jeff Shipley, highlighted the potential benefits of psilocybin for mental health treatment and emphasized the state&#8217;s duty to provide effective options for this purpose. Additionally, State Rep. Larry McBurney noted the importance of ensuring that veterans have access to such treatment alternatives. While the Food and Drug Administration has not approved psilocybin, several states, including Colorado and Oregon, have made strides in decriminalizing or permitting its use in mental health settings. Under the original bill, psilocybin could have been used to treat PTSD, but an amendment approved by the lower chamber of the state legislature expanded the ability of the board to approve other illnesses that could be treated with psilocybin, including depression.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation <a href=\"https:\/\/iowacapitaldispatch.com\/2025\/04\/21\/iowa-house-passes-bill-to-establish-state-psilocybin-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">received<\/a> bipartisan support. State Rep. Jeff Shipley, a Republican who has previously advocated the legalization of psilocybin, said the proposal has shown &ldquo;tremendous promise&rdquo; in managing PTSD.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The state of Iowa has a lot of responsibility in ensuring Iowans not only have access to mental health treatments, but they have access to treatments that are actually effective &mdash; treatments that will actually alleviate the symptoms that patients are suffering from,&rdquo; Shipley said. &ldquo;And so again, House File 978, will go a long way in ensuring that the state of Iowa is fully fulfilling their obligation.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Like many other veterans across the state and across the nation, I didn&rsquo;t know where to turn,&rdquo; state Rep. Larry McBurney, a Democrat, said. &ldquo;I didn&rsquo;t know what options were available to me, and it took me long enough to find what those options were for myself and what worked for me. A handful of states, however, have moved to decriminalize it or allow it in mental health treatment settings.
