Taylor<\/em>, a case in which Maryland parents are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/case-files\/cases\/mahmoud-v-taylor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">challenging<\/a> their school district&rsquo;s removal of parental notice and opt-outs for explicit LGBT content. The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty is <a href=\"https:\/\/becketfund.org\/case\/mahmoud-v-taylor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">representing<\/a> Muslim, Christian, and Jewish parents from Montgomery County, Maryland, in court.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1862988410\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&ldquo;Despite faith differences, these parents believe the new storybooks are age-inappropriate, spiritually and emotionally damaging for their kids, and inconsistent with their beliefs,&rdquo; reads a press <a href=\"https:\/\/becketfund.org\/media\/breaking-supreme-court-to-decide-if-parents-can-opt-kids-out-of-pride-storybooks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">release<\/a> from Becket.<\/p>\n<p>The Montgomery County Board of Education <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/24\/24-297\/351193\/20250304160341072_Mahmoud%20Merits%20Opening%20Brief%20FINAL%20REVISED.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">introduced<\/a> &ldquo;LGBTQ-inclusive&rdquo; storybooks for young children in November 2022, with the radical aim of filtering books by whether they &ldquo;&lsquo;reinforced or disrupted&rsquo; &lsquo;stereotypes,&rsquo; &lsquo;cisnormativity,&rsquo; and power hierarchies,&rsquo;&rdquo; according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/24\/24-297\/351193\/20250304160341072_Mahmoud%20Merits%20Opening%20Brief%20FINAL%20REVISED.pdf\">brief<\/a> from plaintiffs. In March 2023, the district announced &ldquo;it would <a href=\"https:\/\/becketfund.org\/case\/mahmoud-v-taylor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no longer<\/a> notify parents&rdquo; of the content or allow them to exempt their children. Many of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/24\/24-297\/351193\/20250304160341072_Mahmoud%20Merits%20Opening%20Brief%20FINAL%20REVISED.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">books<\/a> were for students from <a href=\"https:\/\/becketfund.org\/media\/breaking-supreme-court-to-decide-if-parents-can-opt-kids-out-of-pride-storybooks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pre-K to fifth grade<\/a> and included the following:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Pride Puppy<\/em>, which tells children as young as 3 or 4 to look for &ldquo;underwear,&rdquo; &ldquo;leather,&rdquo; &ldquo;[drag] king,&rdquo; and &ldquo;[drag] queen&rdquo; in a &ldquo;pride&rdquo; parade.<\/li>\n<li><em>My Rainbow<\/em>, which is about a boy with autism who thinks he is a &ldquo;transgender girl.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><em>Intersection Allies<\/em>, which discusses the meaning of &ldquo;transgender&rdquo; and &ldquo;non-binary&rdquo; and asks children, &ldquo;What pronouns fit you?&rdquo;<\/li>\n<li><em>What Are Your Words?<\/em>, which portrays a child who struggles to find the right pronouns and chooses &ldquo;they\/them.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><em>Love, Violet<\/em>, which describes a lesbian &ldquo;playground romance&rdquo; between two young girls.<\/li>\n<li><em>Born Ready<\/em>, which tells the story of a girl who thinks she is a boy.<\/li>\n<li><em>Jacob&rsquo;s Room to Choose<\/em>, which is about trans-identifying children who make the bathrooms gender-neutral.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <span class=\"hr9t2A3FEZzs8OeQYGIeTuSQVmMm18xUwIOz7yV3U6NfqinKB5d1PlPJD5liJWqaXvd\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Pride Puppy! is an alphabet book, directed at three and four-year-olds, that depicts a pride parade and encourages kids to identify images of drag queens and LGBTQ+ pride flags. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/y2Qhix9VlY\">pic.twitter.com\/y2Qhix9VlY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Alleigh Marr&eacute; (@alleighmarre) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alleighmarre\/status\/1836476985486274766?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 18, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/span> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;The School Board has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/supreme-court-to-weigh-parental-objections-to-lgbt-books-in-classrooms-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"... to weigh parental objections to LGBT books in classrooms - Washington Examiner\">pushed inappropriate gender indoctrination<\/a> on our children instead of focusing on the fundamental areas of education that they need to thrive,&rdquo; said Grace Morrison, board member of Montgomery County opt-out group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kids1stmoco.com\/#:~:text=Kids%20First%20is%20an%20association,the%20Montgomery%20County%20Public%20Schools.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kids First<\/a>, in the Becket <a href=\"https:\/\/becketfund.org\/media\/breaking-supreme-court-to-decide-if-parents-can-opt-kids-out-of-pride-storybooks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">release<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Plaintiffs filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/becketfund.org\/case\/mahmoud-v-taylor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lawsuit<\/a> in May 2023, and the district court ruled against the parents, according to Becket. They appealed to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, which also ruled against parental notice and opt-outs in May 2024. So Becket appealed to the Supreme Court in September. In January, the court decided to hear the case, which plaintiffs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/24\/24-297\/351193\/20250304160341072_Mahmoud%20Merits%20Opening%20Brief%20FINAL%20REVISED.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argue<\/a> is a matter of raising their children according to their beliefs under the First Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>Leftist activists and media have attacked these parents for standing up for their children. Vox <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/scotus\/408356\/supreme-court-mahmoud-taylor-dont-say-gay#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mischaracterized<\/a> their position as &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/dont-say-gay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Don&rsquo;t Say Gay<\/a>&rdquo; &mdash; the left&rsquo;s favorite slogan for policies that uphold parental rights and protect children from radical sexually themed materials. Radical LGBT group GLAAD <a href=\"https:\/\/glaad.org\/fact-sheet-mahmoud-v-taylor-banning-lgbtq-books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claims<\/a>, inaccurately, that the parents are intent on &ldquo;banning LGBTQ-inclusive books.&rdquo; But in reality, these religious parents simply hope to exempt their children from explicit sexual content at school.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Court must make clear: parents, not the state, should be the ones deciding how and when to introduce their children to sensitive issues about gender and sexuality,&rdquo; said Becket Vice President Eric Baxter in the <a href=\"https:\/\/becketfund.org\/media\/breaking-supreme-court-to-decide-if-parents-can-opt-kids-out-of-pride-storybooks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">release<\/a>. &ldquo;Cramming down controversial gender ideology on three-year-olds without their parents&rsquo; permission is an affront to our nation&rsquo;s traditions, parental rights, and basic human decency.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Logan Washburn is a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">staff writer covering election integrity<\/a>.
