The flight lasted 11 minutes and included other notable participants such as CBS anchor Gayle King and Jeff Bezos’ girlfriend,Lauren Sánchez. Despite the celebratory tone from Blue Origin, the legitimacy of calling the participants “astronauts” has been called into question due to the nature of the flight being automated and not involving notable astronaut training or responsibilities.

critics have pointed out that simply taking a ride on a commercial spacecraft dose not qualify someone as an astronaut, with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy highlighting that participants must perform specific duties related to flight safety. The article reflects a sense of ridicule towards Perry and her co-passengers for the perceived superficiality of their experience, notably following Perry’s comments on feeling connected to the “strong divine feminine” after the flight. Ultimately, the article suggests that while the flight was an exhilarating experience, it does not equate to the rigorous qualifications required to be a true astronaut.

Those of you who like to forget middling pop singers once they’ve outlasted their relevance were probably somewhat piqued this past week as you were forced to remember who Katy Perry was.

I know I was a bit miffed; here I’d vacated the very small part of my brain that was dedicated to memorizing the hook to “Teenage Dream” or questioning why “California Gurls” [sic] weren’t just “fine, fresh [and] fierce,” to quote the 2010 song of the same name by Perry, but also “undeniable.”

I’ve talked with numerous Californians both before and after the song was released, and nobody’s ever given me a variation of this argument: “Oh, don’t you tell me there are any females in our state, no matter what that dumb woman says: It’s totally deniable! I admit I was a bit annoyed; I’d cleared out the tiny space in my mind that held onto the catchy tune of “Teenage Dream” or pondered why “California Gurls” [sic] weren’t simply described as “fine, fresh [and] fierce,” as she sang in her 2010 hit. I’ve spoken with many Californians before and after that song’s release, and none have ever argued against its claim about women in our state: “Oh, don’t tell me there are any females here; it’s totally deniable!” This didn’t seem like an issue worth addressing. However, that mental space has been occupied again now that we must acknowledge Perry, 40, is back in the news for becoming an “astronaut” — thanks to her friend’s boyfriend having access to a cool rocket. She was one of six women on a Blue Origin space tourist flight lasting 11 minutes and celebrated as the first all-female crew to venture into space.

While Perry was undoubtedly the most well-known (and somewhat ridiculous) member of this “astronaut” group aboard New Shepard spacecraft, others included Gayle King (CBS anchor), Lauren Sánchez (Jeff Bezos’ partner), Kerianne Flynn (who I don’t care about), Aisha Bowe (also not interested), and Amanda Nguyễn (similarly unremarkable). Blue Origin—Bezos’ second-rate competitor to SpaceX—billed this event as a significant achievement and promoted it heavily in media outlets. Unfortunately for them—and amusingly for us—the Trump administration made it clear that while Blue Origin referred to these individuals as “astronauts,” they had serious reservations about using that term:

“We just completed our 11th human spaceflight… The astronaut crew included Aisha Bowe… Katy Perry…”

But first, let me clarify why this seemed so absurd by sharing what Perry said herself:

Katy Perry expressed feeling connected to her “strong divine feminine” after her Blue Origin flight.

Yes, she felt linked to some mystical concept during an experience where meditation or other therapies could have sufficed—all at a cost of hundreds of thousands per ride plus significant CO2 emissions even before takeoff.

Couldn’t she have just tried ayahuasca instead? Unsurprisingly, criticism came swiftly—Gayle King voiced frustration over downplaying their experience by calling it merely “a ride.”

However, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy pointed out that yes—it essentially was just a ride—which is why they couldn’t truly be considered astronauts:

“The U.S. commercial space industry showcases American ingenuity… But FAA guidelines clearly state: Crewmembers must demonstrate activities essential for public safety during flight.”

In essence, being an astronaut requires involvement in piloting or conducting research during missions along with extensive training—not merely visiting space like walking through a hospital doesn’t make you a doctor. Feeling connected to your inner self doesn’t count either! It’s quite an interesting tale nonetheless—even if I’m still puzzled over why anyone would deny California’s female presence based on one pop song’s lyrics!
