(AP Photo\/Alex Brandon)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Trump called the Iranian people &ldquo;very smart,&rdquo; &ldquo;very energetic,&rdquo; and &ldquo;very successful,&rdquo; emphasizing that he hopes the Iranian regime will be willing to &ldquo;talk&rdquo; and that it&rsquo;s &ldquo;going to be good for them if they do.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t want to do anything that&rsquo;s going to hurt anybody, I really don&rsquo;t. But Iran can&rsquo;t have a nuclear weapon,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The report referenced in the reporter&rsquo;s question claimed that Trump intervened in the Israel Defense Forces&rsquo; plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/3381592\/trump-iran-nuclear-deal-will-be-bombing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">bomb Iranian nuclear facilities<\/a>. His decision was reportedly made amid internal disagreement about how best to deal with the crippled Islamic republic &mdash; diplomatically or militarily.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. envoys are now engaged in a series of discussions with Iranian counterparts, seeking to negotiate a peaceful resolution to diplomatic hostilities that have plagued the bilateral relationship for decades.<\/p>\n<p>A mission led by U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3378745\/witkoff-peace-talks-iran-positive-constructive-white-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">met with Iranian diplomats in Oman<\/a> last weekend for &ldquo;indirect&rdquo; talks carried out by mediators. The White House characterized the meeting as &ldquo;positive&rdquo; and &ldquo;constructive&rdquo; in a subsequent memo.<\/p>\n<p>The two countries are set to meet once again this weekend in Rome, Italy, where a more detailed discussion is expected to take place.<\/p>\n<p>Relations have hit a rough patch over the central question of Iranian denuclearization. <\/p>\n<p>During an interview earlier this week, Witkoff alluded to the idea that Iran would be able to retain uranium enriched to approximately 3.7% for the purposes of energy production. This would be an arrangement similar to that struck by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/barack-obama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">former President Barack Obama<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Witkoff quickly walked that idea back via a statement on social media, asserting that &ldquo;a deal with Iran will only be completed if it is a Trump deal.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, listening to French President Emmanuel Macron prior to a meeting at the Elysee Palace in Paris, Thursday, April 17, 2025. (Ludovic Marin, Pool Photo via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He clarified that &ldquo;any final arrangement must set a framework for peace, stability, and prosperity in the Middle East &mdash; meaning that Iran must stop and eliminate its nuclear enrichment and weaponization program.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/3382180\/iran-nuclear-enrichment-non-negotiable-witkoff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">disputed this notion<\/a> the next day, telling the press that &ldquo;Iran&rsquo;s enrichment is a real, accepted matter.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are ready to build confidence in response to possible concerns, but the issue of enrichment is nonnegotiable,&rdquo; Araghchi told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/benjamin-netanyahu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> is expressing frustration with the West&rsquo;s tepidness in <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">wrangling nuclear weapons capabilities<\/a> from Iran despite the Israeli leader&rsquo;s &ldquo;overt and covert operations.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-to-host-netanyahu-at-mar-a-lago-when-israeli-leader-comes-to-us-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"... to host Netanyahu at Mar-a-Lago when ...i leader comes to US - Washington Examiner\">prime minister&#038;rsquo<\/a>;s office published a series of statements on Thursday reiterating Israel&rsquo;s opposition to Iranian nuclear development, pointedly accusing others of previously dismissing the concern.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;For over a decade, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has led the global campaign against Iran&rsquo;s nuclear program, even when the threat was belittled and labelled &lsquo;political spin&rsquo;, and the Prime Minister was called &lsquo;paranoid,&#8217;&rdquo; the statements read.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Prime Minister has led countless overt and covert operations in the campaign against Iran&rsquo;s nuclear program; it is only due to these operations that Iran does not currently possess a nuclear arsenal,&rdquo; the prime minister&rsquo;s office continued. &ldquo;These actions have delayed Iran&rsquo;s nuclear program by approximately a decade, thanks to Prime Minister Netanyahu&rsquo;s persistence in withstanding great opposition both at home and abroad to his vigorous policy toward Iran.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/3382180\/iran-nuclear-enrichment-non-negotiable-witkoff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>IRAN SAYS NUCLEAR ENRICHMENT IS &lsquo;NON-NEGOTIABLE&rsquo; AFTER WITKOFF FLIPS ON THE ISSUE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu&rsquo;s office made clear in their Thursday statements that their position has not budged. &ldquo;As the Prime Minister has made clear more than once: Israel will not allow Iran to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bolton-taliban-may-seize-nuclear-weapons-from-pakistan-says-pakistani-military-has-radical-islamists-in-its-ranks\/\" title=\"Bolton: Taliban may seize ...s from Pakistan, says Pakistani military has radical Islamists in its ranks\">obtain nuclear weapons<\/a>,&rdquo; it said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has complained that Iran has been slow in warming up to bilateral discussions, openly wondering if it is intentionally dragging out the process.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think they&rsquo;re tapping us along,&rdquo; he remarked on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Araghchi met with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/vladimir-putin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Russian President Vladimir Putin<\/a> in Moscow on Thursday, delivering a letter from Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Russian President Vladimir Putin, left, and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi shake hands during their meeting at the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia, Thursday, April 17, 2025.
