Trump accused Powell of failing to lower rates in a timely manner and suggested that his termination would be welcome.This response came shortly after Powell defended his policies at an event in Chicago, where he mentioned that changes pursued by the Trump governance might deviate from the Fed&#8217;s goals. Trump highlighted the expected interest rate cuts by the European Central Bank and pointed to a report indicating that the U.S. is benefiting from tariffs, arguing that Powell&#8217;s actions are inadequate. Despite calling for Powell&#8217;s removal, Trump previously stated he would not force him out before the end of his term, which expires in May 2026. Too Late should have lowered Interest Rates, like the ECB, long ago, but he should certainly lower them now. Powell&rsquo;s termination cannot come fast enough!&rdquo; Trump posted.<\/p>\n<p>Trump appointed Powell to be Fed chairman in 2018 during his first term, and former President Joe Biden appointed him to another term in 2022. The chairman&rsquo;s term is set to expire in May 2026.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/finance-and-economy\/3382464\/trump-tariffs-move-economy-away-from-federal-reserve-goals-jerome-powell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Powell defended his decision<\/a> not to cut rates as a response to the uncertainty of Trump&rsquo;s trade policy.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;My hope is that we&rsquo;ll get through this and get back what we&rsquo;re always going to be aiming for: maximum employment and price stability. That&rsquo;s what we do. I do think we&rsquo;ll be moving away from those goals, probably for the balance of this year, or at least not making any progress. And then we&rsquo;ll resume that progress as we can,&rdquo; Powell said in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/finance-and-economy\/3382457\/customs-and-border-protection-report-tariff-revenue-small-fraction-trump-estimate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">report from U.S. Customs and Border Protection<\/a> put the total revenue from tariffs at $21 billion, or about $250 million a day, far below Trump&rsquo;s estimates of $2 billion a day.<\/p>\n<p>The president and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have previously said Powell would serve out the rest of his term without their intervening. Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/donald-trump-says-wont-fire-fed-chief-jerome-powell-rcna183276\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"told\">told<\/a> NBC News in December he would not remove Powell before the end of his term, shortly after Powell said such action would be illegal.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Bessent <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/04\/14\/business\/scott-bessent-says-white-house-will-start-interviewing-fed-chair-candidates-this-fall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"told\">told<\/a> Bloomberg TV he was not concerned about Trump attempting to remove Powell early or question the independence of the Fed, hailing it as a &ldquo;jewel box that&rsquo;s got to be preserved.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>While Powell has insisted the president cannot remove him from the position ahead of the end of his term, Trump has challenged the protections of independent agencies in the government since his second term began. <\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/finance-and-economy\/3382464\/trump-tariffs-move-economy-away-from-federal-reserve-goals-jerome-powell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"TARIFFS LIKELY TO MOVE ECONOMY &lsquo;AWAY FROM OUR GOALS&rsquo;: POWELL\">TARIFFS LIKELY TO MOVE ECONOMY &lsquo;AWAY FROM OUR GOALS&rsquo;: POWELL<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Trump fired Gwynne Wilcox, the chairwoman of the National Labor Relations Board, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/labor-board-dismisses-union-misconduct-complaints-following-biden-purge\/\" title=\"Labor Board Dismisses Union Misconduct Complaints Following Biden Purge\">independent agency<\/a>, in his first week in office. She and Cathy Harris of the Merit Systems Protection Board, who was also fired, have challenged the move in courts.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Justice John Roberts allowed the firings to stay in place while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/supreme-court\/3380817\/independent-board-members-fired-by-trump-urge-supreme-court-reinstate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">case <\/a>makes its way through the courts.
