The outage began shortly before 1 p.m. local time and is reported too be the second major blackout as the previous New year&#8217;s Eve. As an inevitable result of the power loss, over 328,000 residents also experienced a lack of running water. A representative from Luma Energy attributed the outage to an unexpected shutdown at all power plants, with investigations underway. Efforts to restore electricity were initiated overnight, and by early Thursday morning, approximately 175,000 customers had their power returned, amounting to only 12% of the total. It is the second massive blackout to hit the island since New Year&rsquo;s Eve. Wes Moore as rising Democratic star<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>A spokesman for the company blamed the outage on an unexpected shutdown at the company&rsquo;s power plants.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;While the cause of the interruption is being investigated, preliminary findings indicate an unexpected shutdown at all generating plants,&rdquo; a representative from Luma Energy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/puerto-rico-goes-completely-dark-another-island-wide-power-outage-rcna201643\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The company worked overnight to restore service to the island&rsquo;s residents. By early Thursday morning, <em>CBS News<\/em> reported that approximately 175,000 people, or only about 12% of the island&rsquo;s customers, had their power back.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Jenniffer Gonzalez was traveling on vacation when she received word of the power outage.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is a shame for the people of Puerto Rico that we have a problem of this magnitude,&rdquo; the governor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/puerto-rico-blackout-most-still-without-power-island-wide-pre-easter\/\">said<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gonzalez reportedly cut her vacation short and returned to Puerto Rico due to the emergency, according to reports.
