During a &#8220;Social Security Day of Action,&#8221; schumer criticized Dudek for allowing damaging cuts to the program and claimed he was a &#8220;hatchet man&#8221; for Trump and Elon Musk, particularly citing MuskS company, DOGE, for its role in accessing sensitive data and making operational changes that could hurt beneficiaries.<\/p>\n<p>Schumer&#8217;s remarks came as Democrats aimed to spotlight the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-releases-list-of-president-trumps-accomplishments-and-it-is-historic\/\" title=\"White House Releases List of President ...\u2019s Accomplishments \u2013  And It Is Historic!\">social security<\/a>,with former President Biden also addressing the topic. The controversy centers around Dudek&#8217;s collaboration with DOGE, which has recommended controversial policy changes, including a reduction in phone verification options for beneficiaries. While these measures were initially set to be implemented, recent adjustments have allowed for some form of verification still, albeit with additional anti-fraud checks.<\/p>\n<p>Dudek&#8217;s management has included significant layoffs and office closures, actions that Schumer and other Democrats argue are detrimental to the service and accessibility of social Security. A key program to do that was gutted<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>During his press conference, Schumer slammed Dudek, claiming the SSA chief has allowed Elon Musk&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/department-of-government-efficiency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Department of Government Efficiency <\/a>to make disastrous cuts to the retirement program and calling him &ldquo;bad medicine for our seniors.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Donald Trump and Elon Musk have a hatchet man in Leland Dudek, an acting Commissioner with an emphasis on the &lsquo;acting,&rsquo; because his real role is to dismantle the very office he is supposed to lead, make better, and protect,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;We have seen his audition and his work on the stage, and it is clear: Dudek is incapable of doing this job in the way it needs to be done. He won&rsquo;t protect seniors. He will hurt them. Leland Dudek should resign.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In a series of posts to X, Schumer reiterated the attacks on Dudek and claimed Musk is using DOGE to &ldquo;kill&rdquo; Social Security.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Leland Dudek has granted DOGE access to private data systems and deeply personal information, laid off thousands of staff, and closed critical offices,&rdquo; the Senate&rsquo;s top Democrat <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenSchumer\/status\/1912223686339276973\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">alleged<\/a>. &ldquo;He is incapable of doing the job in the way it needs to be done.&ldquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The GOP is trying to dismantle Social Security from the inside,&rdquo; he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenSchumer\/status\/1912173079024849266\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">said<\/a> in another statement. &ldquo;They&rsquo;re closing offices, firing workers, and cutting phone lines, making it harder for people to get their benefits.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>DOGE recommended Dudek end a policy allowing people to verify their identity over the phone to obtain SSA benefits. During an interview last month, DOGE employee Aram Moghaddassi argued that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3362606\/who-is-in-charge-of-doge-elon-musk-joe-gebbia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">policy change was necessary<\/a> because fraudsters were using the option to steal identities and taxpayer dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Dudek<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/finance-and-economy\/3376473\/social-security-walks-back-doge-abandonment-phone-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"> initially announced plans<\/a> to implement DOGE&rsquo;s recommendation of ending identification verification over the phone. However, the agency later scaled back the changes earlier this month.
