During his presidential campaign, he referred to wind power derisively and committed to preventing the erection of new windmills during his second term. Following his election, he issued an executive order to halt new offshore wind projects, but Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has not acted on this directive, raising questions about his loyalty to Trump’s agenda. Despite Trump’s directives, several offshore wind projects on the East Coast have announced plans to resume construction, indicating a potential lack of control over the situation. The article also notes actions taken by the Biden administration to fast-track wind projects, which may overlook environmental concerns regarding endangered species. The author suggests that if Burgum fails to adhere to Trump’s order, he might face consequences similar to those Trump previously imposed on uncooperative officials.

President Donald Trump has been very clear that he hates wind power, especially offshore wind.

He has critiqued offshore wind for all the problems it creates, including environmental damage, high costs, the intermittency issue, the potential threat it poses to military operations and commercial navigation, and the fact that it makes the United States dependent on foreign nations, primarily China, for energy security. He has criticized it for various issues such as environmental harm, high expenses, reliability concerns, potential risks to military operations and commercial navigation, and increased reliance on foreign nations like China for energy security. Trump’s criticisms are valid; he often referred to wind power as “garbage” and “horrendous” during his presidential campaign. After winning the election but before taking office, he expressed a desire to prevent the construction of new windmills during his second term and issued an executive order halting new offshore projects. Since then, he has labeled offshore wind as “an economic and environmental disaster,” pointing out its negative visual impact on oceans and citing a rise in whale strandings linked to these developments.

Despite Trump’s clear intentions and directives aimed at blocking further offshore wind development through the Department of Interior (DOI), Secretary Doug Burgum has not yet acted on this executive order. Meanwhile, four East Coast offshore wind projects that received permits from the Biden administration plan to resume construction by May 1, 2025—potentially undermining Trump’s authority.

Trump’s administration has issued numerous executive orders related to environmental policy and energy management. Key figures like Lee Zeldin from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Chris Wright from the Department of Energy have swiftly implemented many of Trump’s initiatives within legal frameworks. They have restarted approvals for LNG export terminals while rolling back regulations affecting fossil fuel plants.

Interestingly, Burgum has executed some orders aligned with Trump’s agenda but remains inactive regarding halting new offshore wind projects—a topic Trump is particularly passionate about. This raises questions about Burgum’s loyalty or personal views on renewable energy since he previously supported such initiatives as North Dakota’s governor.

Burgum was appointed by Trump specifically for this role at DOI where he could easily pause ongoing construction based on existing legal provisions if new information arises that affects project approvals negatively—something Biden’s DOI overlooked when fast-tracking these projects without considering their cumulative impact on endangered species like the North Atlantic right whale (NARW).

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had warned about these dangers which were ignored in favor of rapid development under Biden’s climate agenda. Therefore, Burgum possesses both legal authority and a directive from Trump that necessitates action against ongoing constructions; failing to do so may lead him into conflict with Trump’s expectations—echoing past instances where officials were dismissed for not adhering strictly to directives during Trump’s presidency

https://www.westernjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Michael-Featured-Image-2025-04-13T141236.503.jpg
[33651
28356,33017,3634
post-2423098","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-burgum","tag-political-analysis","tag-trump
https://www.westernjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Michael-Featured-Image-2025-04-13T141236.503.jpg
["GET
