The U.S.Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has referred the case to the Justice Department after Maine missed a deadline to sign an agreement prohibiting schools from allowing transgender students assigned male at birth to compete in female sports. this situation arises from Title IX, which prohibits sex-based discrimination in educational programs receiving federal funding.

Governor Mills responded defiantly to President Trump’s assertion that non-compliance would threaten federal funding, stating, “we’ll see you in court.” The Biden administration plans to challenge maine’s policies, which it deems discriminatory and at odds with federal law. As tensions escalate, the state’s education department must brace for a legal battle, with Attorney General Pam Bondi asserting that the DOJ will rigorously defend women’s rights in accordance with Title IX. The federal Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has referred Maine to the Justice Department for enforcement due to the state’s noncompliance with policies prohibiting males from participating in female sports, as reported by WMTW-TV. This could have significant consequences for Maine. The issue revolves around Title IX of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which bans sex discrimination in federally funded educational programs. Under Trump’s administration, allowing self-identified transgender athletes—males identifying as females—to compete in women’s sports is viewed as discriminatory against girls and women.

Maine’s education department had a deadline to agree to a directive that would prevent transgender students assigned male at birth from competing in girls’ sports. When this deadline passed without compliance, action was taken by the Trump administration. Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor stated that Maine had ample opportunity to comply with Title IX but chose an extreme ideological agenda over student safety and dignity. Consequently, the state will now need to defend its practices before a federal judge.

The conflict has been brewing for weeks; during a White House meeting on February 21 where Trump met with governors nationwide, he specifically asked Mills if her state would adhere to his executive order banning boys and men from female sports, warning her about potential loss of federal funding if they did not comply.

Maine is solidly Democratic; alongside Mills as governor, both legislative chambers are controlled by Democrats. Additionally, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows attempted unsuccessfully to bar Trump from appearing on the ballot based on claims of insurrection following the 2020 election—a move rejected by both state and U.S. Supreme Courts.

Now facing scrutiny from a Republican-led Justice Department under Attorney General Pam Bondi—who has made clear her stance on defending women’s rights under Title IX—the situation poses significant challenges for Maine’s education department. Bondi emphasized that her department will ensure compliance with federal law and Trump’s executive order through all necessary legal means.

As Trainor noted regarding Governor Mills’ situation: “She will see the Trump administration in court.

[33651
33274,7076,35136,9148,33591
post-2422918","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-civil-rights","tag-doj","tag-education-policy","tag-maine","tag-title-ix
["GET
