Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube announced that $3.1 million will be distributed among 740 farmers affected by the campaign that aimed to resettle Black families. This initiative is part of Zimbabwe’s efforts to mend relations with Western countries that have imposed sanctions on it due to human rights abuses linked to the land seizures under former President Robert Mugabe.

The government will distribute the funds as part of a previously established agreement, but this first payout only represents a small fraction (1%) of the total compensation owed under a larger $311 million deal. While some farmers have received compensation, many have not signed the agreement and continue to hold onto their title deeds. The compensation provided does not account for the full value of the land but rather for buildings and infrastructure lost. The broader goal of the compensation program is to help reform Zimbabwe’s economy and improve international relations.

Zimbabwe begins compensating white farmers affected by often-violent land seizures

The Zimbabwean government will compensate white farmers who were forcibly removed from their land more than 20 years ago in a bid to mend ties with Western nations that have sanctioned it over human rights abuses.

Zimbabwe Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube said the government would disburse $3.1 million to 740 white farmers who lost their land during a resettlement campaign in 2000 and 2001 aimed at relocating 300,000 Black families.
