and this week is no different.<\/p>\n<p>When they apparently thought nobody was looking, a cabal of GOP senators comprised of Alaska&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/lisa-murkowski\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lisa Murkowski<\/a>, Utah&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/11\/22\/want-better-republicans-stop-sitting-out-primaries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Curtis<\/a>, Kansas&rsquo; Jerry Moran, and North Carolina&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/thom-tillis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thom Tillis<\/a> &mdash; who&rsquo;s up for reelection next year &mdash; quietly <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.md\/XYj1N\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sent<\/a> a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/25893839-file-4615pdf\/#document\/p1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> on Wednesday to Senate Majority Leader John Thune regarding ongoing negotiations over the party&rsquo;s reconciliation package.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1257845281\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Their concern? That the final version of the legislation containing priorities backed by President Trump (tax cuts and border security) will also include provisions fully repealing President Biden&rsquo;s wrongly named <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/inflation-reduction-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)<\/a>, a 2022 law filled with Democrat-backed goodies and &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/heritageaction.com\/key-vote\/key-vote-no-on-the-inflation-reduction-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Green New Deal-style<\/a>&rdquo; policy priorities. <\/p>\n<p>Specifically, these four Republican senators asked that a final reconciliation package forgo &ldquo;full-scale&rdquo; cuts of tax credits for the energy sector &mdash; which includes those for so-called &ldquo;renewable energy sources.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The United States produces some of the cleanest and most efficient energy in the world, and an all-of-the-above approach &mdash; including support for traditional and renewable energy sources &mdash;has long been a hallmark of our energy strategy,&rdquo; the senators wrote. &ldquo;To that end, many American companies have made substantial investments in domestic energy production and infrastructure based on the current energy tax framework. A wholesale repeal, or the termination of certain individual credits, would create uncertainty, jeopardizing capital allocation, long-term project planning, and job creation in the energy sector and across our broader economy.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In typical Republican fashion, the four senators tossed around unconvincing pledges to &ldquo;identify waste, fraud, abuse, and necessary reforms,&rdquo; while completely ignoring the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/25\/bidens-green-policies-will-have-people-freezing-this-winter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inefficiencies<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/01\/15\/ercot-admits-wind-solar-power-alone-cant-keep-texans-warm-during-record-breaking-arctic-blast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&ldquo;green&rdquo; energy<\/a> and the enormous price tag associated with the Democrat-backed credits they&rsquo;re defending. <\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/blog\/inflation-reduction-act-ira-credits-repeal-reform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">March 20 report<\/a> by the Tax Foundation, &ldquo;In the most recent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/system\/files\/131\/Tax-Expenditures-FY2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Treasury expenditures report<\/a>, IRA green credits are projected to cost $1.16 trillion from 2025 to 2034, owing to $830 billion in lost revenue and $330 billion in outlays.&rdquo; Those projections, the report noted, &ldquo;include some costs from green credit policies that predate the IRA.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/policy-analysis\/budgetary-cost-inflation-reduction-acts-energy-subsidies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">March 11 analysis<\/a> by the libertarian Cato Institute estimated even higher long-term costs for the IRA&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hey-neat-spend-1000-on-green-energy-and-the-feds-will-give-you-a-300-tax-credit-to-reduce-inflation-thanks-biden\/\" title=\"Hey Neat, Spend ,000 On ... ... And The Feds Will Give You A 0 Tax Credit To Reduce Inflation. Thanks,  Biden!\">energy-related tax credits<\/a>. In its report, the organization projects &ldquo;the energy subsidies in the [IRA] will cost between $936 billion and $1.97 trillion over the next 10&nbsp;years, and between $2.04 trillion and $4.67 trillion by 2050.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>(The Tax Foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/blog\/inflation-reduction-act-ira-credits-repeal-reform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">estimated<\/a> that full repeal of the IRA&rsquo;s green energy tax credits &ldquo;would raise $851 billion over the 2025 to 2034 budget window.&rdquo;)<\/p>\n<p>Murkowski, Curtis, Moran, and Tillis aren&rsquo;t alone in their bid to salvage parts of Democrats&rsquo; disastrous IRA, however. Last month, more than 20 House Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/03\/10\/house-republican-clean-energy-tax-breaks-00218126\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sent<\/a> a <a href=\"https:\/\/garbarino.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/garbarino.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/2025.03.09-tax-credits-letter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> to House Ways and Means Committee Chair Jason Smith, in which they similarly expressed opposition to cutting Biden-era energy tax credits, such as those for so-called &ldquo;cleaner and more efficient&rdquo; energy industries.<\/p>\n<p>(State GOP officials in so-called &ldquo;red states&rdquo; like <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/02\/05\/oklahoma-republicans-are-helping-green-energy-cronies-scam-taxpayers-out-of-billions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oklahoma<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/02\/22\/governor-of-nations-largest-coal-state-leads-charge-to-decarbonize-the-west\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wyoming<\/a> also boast track records of <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">pimping left-wing green energy projects<\/a>). <\/p>\n<p>To call this GOP-backed effort to save provisions of Biden&rsquo;s IRA surprising would simply be untrue.<\/p>\n<p>For years, Republicans have pleaded with voters to send them to Washington to repeal destructive Democrat policies, only to then abandon such efforts once given the power to do so. (Remember their years-long pledge to &ldquo;repeal and replace&rdquo; Obamacare? Good times.)<\/p>\n<p>The unfortunate reality is that many of the GOPers who fancy themselves as &ldquo;Republicans&rdquo; aren&rsquo;t conservative at all. They&rsquo;re establishment political opportunists who learned to regurgitate Fox News talking points and say whatever it takes to get elected.<\/p>\n<p>Until voters (and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/06\/by-backing-establishment-candidates-trump-hampers-his-voters-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trump<\/a>) send these kinds of GOP phonies packing at the ballot box, they should expect more of the same from this all-too-often pathetic excuse for a &ldquo;conservative&rdquo; party.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Shawn Fleetwood is a staff writer for The Federalist and a graduate of the University of Mary Washington.
