It points out that this situation is being interpreted as Trump “blinking” or backing down,a view supported by various media outlets. While many countries benefited from the pause, China did not, as they maintained high tariffs on U.S. goods. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested that trump set a strategic trap for China, leading to a favorable outcome for the U.S. markets, and emphasized the need for the U.S. to cooperate with allies who did not retaliate. The article further features perspectives from business figures like Kevin O’Leary, who criticized China’s trade practices and supported tougher tariffs. it frames Trump’s decisions as part of a larger strategy to reshape global trade dynamics and reinforce the idea that those aligning with China may be making a strategic mistake.

If one narrative has emerged from the 90-day pause in “Liberation Day” tariffs while the U.S. president negotiates with other heads of state, it’s this: Donald Trump blinked.

In fact, this view was so common that the headlines were pretty much the same. The Wall Street Journal: “Why Trump Blinked on Tariffs Just Hours After They Went Into Effect.” Vox: “Why Trump blinked.” The Atlantic: “Trump Blinked.”

The titles — as you might imagine by the roster of publications that printed them — got successively shorter as the pieces got less nuanced. The stock market bounced back, most countries saw tariffs paused while new deals started to be negotiated, and it was status quo ante.

However, the key to understanding why blinking is overly simplistic is that, while most countries saw their tariffs negated for the time being, not all countries did — and, very specifically, China did not.

Both China and the United States have engaged in escalating tariffs over the past week, with Beijing raising its tariffs on U.S. goods to 84 percent while Washington reciprocated with a 125 percent tariff on Chinese goods on Wednesday.

“At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable,” Trump said on in a post announcing the pause.

( @realDonaldTrump – Post )
( Donald J. Not all nations benefited from this pause; notably, China did not.

In recent days, both China and the U.S. have escalated their tariff measures against each other; Beijing increased its tariffs on American goods to 84%, while Washington responded by imposing a 125% tariff on Chinese imports last Wednesday. In his announcement about the pause in tariffs, Trump remarked that he hoped China would soon recognize that exploiting America and other nations was no longer viable or acceptable.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hinted at this strategy during a CNBC interview prior to the announcement when he suggested retaliatory tariffs would not favor Beijing: “What do we lose by them raising tariffs? We export only one-fifth of what they send us.” He expressed optimism about large countries with significant trade deficits coming forward quickly if they presented solid proposals for negotiation.

After announcing the tariff pause from the White House, Bessent emphasized it was part of Trump’s broader strategy and suggested that China had been maneuvered into an unfavorable position through these actions: “They’ve shown themselves as bad actors.”

Bessent also indicated willingness to collaborate with allies who refrained from retaliation: “It wasn’t complicated—don’t retaliate and things will go well.”

He wasn’t alone in his assessment; Kevin O’Leary from “Shark Tank,” who supports Trump’s trade policies, argued for even higher tariffs against China due to their disregard for international rules over decades.

Moreover, Bessent warned any nation considering alignment with Beijing could face dire consequences: aligning with them would be akin to self-sabotage.

The narrative surrounding Trump’s actions may seem like he’s merely capitulated; however, if it leads to isolating Beijing within global markets—a goal they are willing to pursue—it could be seen as strategic maneuvering rather than weakness. If future presidents had similarly confronted trade issues without hesitation over decades past—even at slight costs—the U.S. might still hold its status as an industrial leader alongside technological advancement today

[33651
4501,8447,16957,32403,3634
post-2421963","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-china","tag-europe","tag-tariff","tag-trade-war","tag-trump
["GET
