According to Bill Suess of the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality, the spill was detected around 7:44 a.m. after a pipeline worker heard a “mechanical bang.” The leak occurred about 80 miles southwest of Fargo, and affected an agricultural field south of the pump station. Approximately 3,500 barrels of oil leaked due to the incident. While the exact timeline for when the pipeline will resume operations is unclear,it depends on the cause of the leak and the necessary repairs. Fortunately, ther were no reported impacts on people or structures, and measures have been taken to contain the spill and protect nearby streams. The north Dakota Department of Environmental Quality is overseeing cleanup efforts at the site.

The Keystone Pipeline was shut down Tuesday after a leak developed in North Dakota.

Bill Suess, manager of the spill investigation program at the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality, said a pipeline worker heard a “mechanical bang”
