Despite the apparent energy and excitement reported by media outlets, the piece challenges the authenticity of these crowds, suggesting they may not translate into real electoral support.

It references data expert Tony seruga, who has analyzed crowd sizes at recent protests and rallies thru GPS data, revealing that attendance figures may be exaggerated. As a notable exmaple, a protest in Chicago claimed 30,000 participants, but Seruga’s data detected only 7,498 mobile devices. This discrepancy raises questions about the validity of claimed numbers and suggests that many attendees may have overlapping participation in various political events, rather than indicating genuine grassroots support.

The article presents a critical view of how media narratives may distort the actual political engagement by equating crowd sizes and energy with meaningful political movements. It concludes by urging readers to approach such enthusiasm with skepticism, particularly in the context of ongoing political theater that can mislead public perception.

For those of you with longer memories than, say, a sparrow — unusual in our news cycle-focused media, but a condition more prevalent in the rest of the world — you may perhaps remember the crowing about crowds the left engaged in after now-former Vice President Kamala Harris became the heir apparent to the Democratic nomination.

“It’s really hard to overstate just how different the environment is for Democrats now,” The New York Times’ Maya King proclaimed from a “<a href="https://www.conservativenewsdaily.net/breaking-news/kamala-has-biggest-rally-yet-but-people-might-be-showing-up-for-someone-else/" title="... He used demographic data — “age, gender, income, education level,” that sort of thing — and psychographic data, which “dives deeper into people’s lifestyles, values, attitudes, interests, personality traits, social class, activities, and how they make purchasing decisions.”

“For more insight into what data we also look at in addition to GPS location data would be demographic and psychographic data using over 6,000 different databases, i.e., like the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Pew Research Center, market research firms like YouGov, Experian, specialized tools like ESRI’s Tapestry Segmentation, consumer surveys, social media platforms like 𝕏, Facebook, Linkedin,” he added in a Saturday evening post to X.

“Additionally, by cross pollinating each device with other devices regularly within close proximity to the target device we are able to build a detailed profile for each target,” he said, adding that he had identified six groups that were behind driving turnout to these events: “Disruption Project, Rise & Resist, Indivisible Project, Troublemakers, the Democratic Socialists of America and the Muslim Brotherhood.”

“We have also identified 11 additional groups paying for protests, demonstrations and riots, many are linked to foreign bad actors in countries funding terrorism,” he alleged.

As for those detected via GPS, 92 percent were identified “having attended 5 or more Kamala Harris rallies, antifa/blm, pro-Hamas, [or] pro-Palestinian protests.”

GPS—7,498 mobile devices.

Organizers are claiming 30,000. King praised Harris’s ability to energize a segment of the Democratic base that had previously disengaged. Time and again, we heard the same old refrain: Look at the enthusiasm! The atmosphere! The long lines!

Hundreds of supporters were waiting outside Wilkes University’s McHale Center for her rally that evening, even though Harris wouldn’t speak until 7 PM. A tweet noted how this line might be one of the longest ever seen.

Despite losing every swing state and failing to win the popular vote, she seemed to have energy and crowds—or so it appeared.

For those with shorter attention spans who may have missed it, there were significant protests across American cities against President Donald Trump and Elon Musk recently. A massive protest occurred in downtown Chicago as part of the “Hands Off!” movement against both figures.

This followed large turnouts at rallies led by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez under their “Fighting Oligarchy” campaign.

Such enthusiasm! Such energy! Such large gatherings! One might expect Maya King would be out there commenting on how dramatically different things are for Democrats now.

However, if you’re curious about why enthusiasm doesn’t necessarily translate into votes, you should consider insights from entrepreneur Tony Seruga. He has analyzed these crowd sizes using GPS data—and unsurprisingly found discrepancies between reported numbers and actual attendance figures. For example, while organizers claimed 30,000 attendees at a Chicago protest last weekend, GPS data indicated only 7,498 mobile devices were present. Further analysis revealed that many attendees had previously participated in multiple Kamala Harris rallies or other protests linked to specific groups.

While we don’t have access to Seruga’s dataset ourselves—it’s important to note this isn’t his first encounter with inflated turnout claims suggesting these events lack genuine grassroots support. In another instance in Denver where reports claimed 34,000 attendees were present; GPS data showed only around 20k devices detected—again indicating many participants had similar backgrounds tied back to previous political events or movements.

Political theater is common across all sides of politics; denying its existence is naive or ignorant.
