Al Sharpton has issued a three-week ultimatum to PepsiCo, demanding a meeting regarding the company&#8217;s decision to eliminate its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives or face a boycott. In a letter to PepsiCo CEO Ramon Laguarta, Sharpton expressed disappointment over the move, calling it a retreat from equity and claiming that political pressures have taken precedence over principles. PepsiCo has been a pioneer in employing diverse executives and establishing community partnerships; however, in a recent memo, the company announced it would no longer pursue goals for minority representation. This decision aligns with a broader trend among businesses reevaluating DEI efforts following political changes. Companies like Coca-Cola have reaffirmed their commitment to DEI, warning that neglecting thes initiatives could harm their operations and future success. Sharpton&#8217;s National Action Network will identify two companies for boycott due to similar actions in the next 90 days. Its brands include Gatorade, Lay&rsquo;s potato chips, Doritos, Mountain Dew as well as Pepsi.<\/p>\n<p>In a memo sent to employees in February, Laguarta said the company will no longer set goals for minority representation in its managerial roles or supplier base.<\/p>\n<p>Since President Donald Trump returned to the White House earlier this year,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-holiday-mlk-day-pride-black-hispanic-dei-047bbdbfc12ea6e9a9731f5861d84e70\">U.S. government agencies<\/a>, companies and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/dei-trump-school-discrimination-federal-funding-7d1025753b9bd924711ace4069fca399\">schools<\/a>&nbsp;have scrambled to reevaluate policies and programs aimed at increasing diversity among its employees and reducing discrimination against members of minority groups, women and LGBTQ+ people.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3228342\/department-of-government-efficiency-what-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WHAT IS DOGE? WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF GOVERNMENT EFFICIENCY<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Trump&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-executive-orders-dei-7ef0bf4ce1d465f6b61f3fcfde544593\">ended DEI programs<\/a>&nbsp;within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/better-than-expected-u-s-economy-added-638000-jobs-in-october-unemployment-dropped-to-6-9\/\" title=\"Better Than Expected: U.S. Economy Added 638,000 Jobs in October, Unemployment Dropped to 6.9%\">federal government<\/a> and has warned schools to do the same or risk losing federal money. Large retailers like Walmart and Target have also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/target-dei-supreme-court-diversity-7f068dfee61a68a9a1f82b94e135b323\">phased out DEI initiatives<\/a>&nbsp;since Trump took office.<\/p>\n<p>Following decades of activism and protests by marginalized groups, several pieces of legislation and executive orders in the 1960&rsquo;s laid the groundwork for what would become known today as the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion movement in the workplace. In the 1970&rsquo;s, in response to the new laws and regulations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/asian-american-activists-blast-bidens-pandering-anti-racism-order\/\" title=\"Asian-American Activists Blast Biden\u2019s \u2018Pandering\u2019 Anti-Racism Order\">affirmative action policies<\/a> were introduced, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">employee resource groups started<\/a> to emerge, and businesses began implementing diversity trainings. This led to increased hiring of women and minorities.<\/p>\n<p>By the 1980&rsquo;s, new studies began highlighting the business incentive for fostering inclusive workplaces. Focus shifted from compliance with the law to &ldquo;creating an environment where everybody feels that they can achieve their highest goal,&rdquo; said Mary-Frances Winters, an author and strategist focusing on diversity and organizational development. &ldquo;This was really about looking at changing demographics, looking at who was coming into the workforce and also looking at how people with different backgrounds can lead to greater innovation,&rdquo; Winters said.<\/p>\n<p>Research continued to emphasize that diversity in the workplace was a matter of business survival, with some businesses even beginning to mandate cultural competency within leadership. PepsiCo was one of those companies, Sharpton pointed out in his letter.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1940s and 1950s, PepsiCo hired some of the first Black sales and marketing executives in corporate America, Sharpton wrote, and by the 1980&rsquo;s the company&rsquo;s policies led to the creation of Black consumer advisory boards.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You did this not because it was easy &mdash; but because it was right,&rdquo; Sharpton wrote in the letter. &ldquo;That legacy is now in jeopardy.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In the early 2000&rsquo;s, Sharpton sat on PepsiCo&rsquo;s African American advisory board.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3355854\/trump-tailored-threats-maintain-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HOW TRUMP IS DEPLOYING &lsquo;TAILORED&rsquo; THREATS TO TIGHTEN HIS GRIP ON POWER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>PepsiCo&rsquo;s announcement in February that it would rollback inclusion efforts came as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/coca-cola-co\">Coca-Cola<\/a>&nbsp;reaffirmed support for its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-dei-businesses-diversity-05fb71a91cab7e3bbe8729f6bdeb4983\">DEI efforts<\/a>.
