A week ago, a gallon of regular gas was $3.157. On March 18, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3352201\/gas-prices-increase-middle-workweek\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cost $3.078 per gallon<\/a>. And a month ago, the national average price for regular gas was $3.099 per gallon. The year began with hopes of breaking the $3 per gallon threshold. In early January, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in the U.S. was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3275284\/gas-prices-increase-to-start-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$3.067<\/a>. Prices increased during the last days of the Biden administration. Then, gas prices began to decrease the day after President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Donald Trump<\/a> was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/finance-and-economy\/3296448\/gas-prices-trump-first-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inaugurated on Jan. 20<\/a>. Costs continued downward until February, when the president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3311112\/gas-prices-increase-tariffs-talk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">threatened tariffs<\/a> against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Mexico<\/a> and Canada, and costs gradually increased.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Prices increased in February before consumers felt a reprieve in March, lasting until the middle of the month. The Trump administration promoted the decline in prices and took a political victory lap on March 17. Two days later, the price of gas began to rise again. On March 31, gas prices crept back up to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3363871\/gas-prices-increase-pumps-begin-week\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$3.168<\/a>. Fuel costs increased by ten cents per gallon less than a week later.<\/p>\n<p>Gas prices vary in each state. The cheapest gas prices tend to be found in the Gulf region, while the states with the highest prices are on the West Coast. Mississippi has the most affordable gas, costing $2.759 per gallon. This is followed by Tennessee at $2.808, Oklahoma at $2.81, Louisiana at $2.84, and Alabama at $2.871.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, California has the most expensive gas prices, with an average of $4.943 per gallon. This is over 40 cents per gallon higher than the next closest state, Hawaii, with an average price of $4.525 per gallon. Washington state is next with a cost of $4.359, then Nevada at $4.008, followed by Oregon at $3.99.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/energy-and-environment\/3368535\/most-energy-imports-spared-trump-sweeping-tariffs\/\"><strong>MOST ENERGY IMPORTS SPARED FROM TRUMP&rsquo;S SWEEPING TARIFFS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is also quite a price difference in the states around the nation&rsquo;s capital, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia, which have rotated over the last year with the title of the state with the cheapest gas prices in the Delmarva region. Virginia is the state currently with the lowest prices in the area at $3.08 per gallon. This is slightly less expensive than Delaware, which has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gas-prices-an-increase-of-five-cents-per-gallon-in-last-three-days-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"...: An increase of five cents per ... in last three days - Washington Examiner\">statewide average cost<\/a> for a gallon of regular gas of $3.144.
